Has anyone converted their SL-8 to a G-36C configuration?

I'm thinking of cutting an SL-8 barrel down to 23cm G36C barrel length. I'm looking for the details WRT the repositioning and opening up of the gas port.

Also would appreciate feedback as to how accurate the 5.56 NATO round is when using a short barrel.

Thanks

Actually the hkpro forum has little info on the G36C conversion, its mostly for the G36K. I think there must be some law in the states that makes it difficult to have a rifle with a 10 inch barrel or something?

Also I've looked here on CGN extensively and can not find any threads about G36C conversions, or mention of anyone who has done one.

There are quite a few posts about the conversion there, and are quite popular.. There had been issues with some conversions cutting down the op rod and spring, It's now more popular to find a de-milled G36C and taking the barrel / piston / op rod components from them.

When moving the gas block back, the orifice size must be changed.

Heres a pic of 2 G36 Barrels and 1 Cut down SL8 Barrel..

A few quick posts I found

There were a couple threads on specific barrel lengths / specs I can't find them right now.. Keep wading through the site, the info is there.

I don't think it's quite as popular up here, as we would be taking a non restricted rifle, and neutering it.

you can't legally cut down or install a barrel on an SL8 shorter than 18.5

I'll have to do some reasearch into that, I figured it was ok because I've seen guys with AR's that I assume have barrels much shorter than 18.5". I'll do some more digging.

Yeah I read through those, they are mainly for G36K conversions, not what I'm interested in, although based on what powerwagon says, I might not be doing the G36C. However if I can do it, I doubt I can get an original G36C barrel, I see them on gunbroker, looking at about 2k... but not many US sellers would ship expensive gun parts to Canada, I think the 100$ export law is still being enforced.

Thats a good reference / comparison photo, you can see the dimensioning and how it was done, thanks.

AR's can have a shorter barrel because either A) they came factory that way or B) it's already a restricted firearm.

Cut the barrel yourself and it becomes Prohib.

Yep, this would be why I've not seen any one here who has done the G36C conversion.

prohibited:
-rifles and shotguns that have been altered so that their barrel length is less than 457 mm (about 18 inches)

I was really hoping to have two barreled uppers for the SL-8, one original for target shooting and one really short for fun... here is a mock up I photoshoped, my version of the civilian G36C:

Pardon, but I believe that a (centerfire) semi-auto less than the prohibited length is prohibited, whether or not it came from the factory that way.

Drat - I hate these rules...

a centerfire rifle that comes from the factory with a barrel shorter than 18.5 is restricted. but it must come from the factory that way. (VZ58 & CZ858)

BTW you cannot get an export permit for a rifle barrel shorter than 16 inches from the US.

Yeah, its a cheap and easy way to get the functionality of a G36C. You only have to alter the barrel, push rod, gas port, and the fore grip. If you keep the diameter of the barrel it will give you a bit of weight that should help with the recoil and still be lightweight.

The upper is the firearm on the SL8, the lower is not. Same idea as the FN's.

Two uppers wouldn't really work as you would have two registered rifles.

In that my plan relied on picking up for cheap a beat up or otherwise ruined SL-8 that still had a solid receiver and barrel...
