Slam Fires SKS

Unfortunately the only ammo I can find locally is the green box corrosive stuff, no idea what origin. Other then that it's Remington soft point at 26 bucks a box. I seem to have bought all the FMJ stuff already...

Is there such a thing as non corrosive milsurp ammo in this caliber, I have used Portuguese 7.62 NATO, berdan but non corrosive.

I think you're out of luck here, if there is it won't be surplus until 2020 or so.
But you can shoot corrosive in the SKS, this is what it was designed for. The only drawback is that you have to clean it well after each shooting.

It is advisable but not required, the gun was designed to fire that way. If you shoot milsurp ammo then no problems; same with PRVI PARTISAN but if you swhitch to Rem or other commercial ammo you may have doubles.

Is it best for all of us that got SKS to change the firing pin ?

If I understand correctly all SKS made after 1950 does NOT have that spring ?

FWIW I would stick to Norinco or Czech surplus. The US factory stuff is too soft.

Bingo, primers are the problem here not the gun. The firing pin has been cleaned and rattles around according to the author.

If your going to be using factory new ammo with commercial primers that are softer, causing the double taps, then you need to upgrade your firing pin with a spring.

There is a kit that you can buy that hols the firing pin back under spring tension instead of having it free float. When it free floats you get very light primer strikes when chambering a round, thus you need something to hold the firing pin back for regular ammo.

Last year my buddy had his Norinco SKS out for the first time. He was shooting commercial ammo.
After firing 5 rounds loaded one at a time, he loaded the magazine to 5 rounds. Upon firing his first shot from the magazine he had an out of battery slam fire. The shrapnel from the brass put a pretty good cut in his thumb. The case was also jammed in the chamber.

If I bought an SKS I would definitely invest in a firing pin spring.

Hmmm....me wonders about the new Nork Sks's and these Russian batches that everyone is fanatical over.
I bought a Nork Sks brand spankin new back in '85 and it has NEVER double tapped or fired out of battery in all this time. And that includes the 3 years I used it deer hunting with Federal SP ammo. The latest ammo I've used is the Czech steel cased stuff. I also had about 900 rounds of brass cased Yugoslav stuff I bought years ago. Never a problem.

Just an update, I seem to have fixed my problem with some careful reloading. Using CCI 450 Magnum small rifle primers. I am uniforming the primer pockets and seating them about .003 deeper. The 450 M has a thicker cup than most other primers, and the forester primer pocket tool adjusts great.

About a hundred rounds through the "problem" rifle without one slam fire. The factory ammo would cause trouble at least once in every 20 rounds.

Seems to be cured without altering the gun.
