I've had this idea in my head for a while and resisted posting for fear of sounding like an idiot but just can't take it anymore. I thought it would be fun to build a "sleeper" precision/hunting rifle. In my mind something that looks very plain Jane, perhaps even having an uncared for look but that shoots like heck. Not a rifle for formal competition but more for when you get together with the lads and shoot between 200 to 500 yards and some hunting where not a lot of walking is required, varmints, tree stand etc
The first thing that comes to mind would be a Stevens 200 with a medium heavy (insert quality barrel maker of your choice) barrel. Bedded, floated and a great trigger etc etc Caliber in my mind would be .260rem, .243AI for no particular reason and some good but not overbearing glass.

So what do you guys think? A stupid idea and a big waste of time? or Something that sounds like fun with an actual practical use?? Interested in hearing your opinions....

Sounds pretty cool! I wish I knew anything about 'precision shooting' (aside from watching Nutnfancy on Youtube..not sure if that counts eh)

I still can't get over the fact that there's a gun owner, living in Orleans! That's one more than I ever would have thought, but in that case; the more gun stuff you do, the better.

Just remember to post pics along the way. This will be cool to see

Something like my uncle has. A CG-80 with a sporter stock. Shortened bbl and sporting iron sights installed with an something 6x scope. Older blued steel finish on the scope. Bloody tack driver. Granted it is his hunting rifle but oncenI bedded it for him it was constantly floating around .75 moa with most stuff. Didnt like expensive nosler factory ammo, loved the cheep federal 140's. Some loading time would probaby squeeze more out but it is minute of whitetail.

Sounds like a cool idea to me to. I was going to do an extreme budget build with a savage axis heavy barrel (I'm pretty poor at the moment lol). The stevens 200 actions have gone up in price or disappeared as people are wise as to what they are now so they are not going for the same price they used to be.

Savage Axis
Shilen SS Select Match prefit
Rifle basix or Timney trigger

Keep the orig plastic stock but bed and open up the barrel channel ALOT

Good base, rings and optics. Handload good bullets and have fun

For chambering, I am having an absolute hoot with the 6XC and can highly recommend it. I make my brass from PRVI 22-250.

Fast twist 22-250 for the 80's and 90's would give you 300WM type ballistics with zero recoil. Fast twist 223? 243?

All good fun.

Whatever floats your boat, but you still need to address the quality of the loads and of the shooter pulling the trigger.

I sold a .243 Axis about a month ago thinking it wouldn't be a good candidate. Shows what I know...
I'll be rereading some of your articles particularly the budget build one.

Heh... Kinda just jogged my memory, I know a guy with 3 NOS Stevens in 30-06... Might have to order up a 6.5-06 or a 280ai tube for my next Stevens "Lazy Long Weekend" build...

Sleeper would have to be something run down. Like a Mosin, or Norc.

Steven 200 or a Axis, yeah well thats just a action with a GOOD barrel. Nobody will notice. You start shooting X rings with a Mosin or some other junker milsurp, THAT will impress more.

Maybe Terry will kinda chuckle at you if you ask for a Mcgrowen barrel for a mosin. Fit in in a milsurp stock. Bed it and such.

Ya nobody seems to notice when a Savage or Stevens is exceptionally accurate, most are out of the box :chuckle:... After you tweak em a little ;) I had a thread going on a while back where I bought a stock Stevens 200 in .223 and detailed the work I had to do to get it to consistently group, think I stopped updating it around 3/4" 5 shot strings... A fun weekend project for sure.

If anybody wants a "sleeper" project like you described I have a ole full wood Spanish Mauser in .308 that still has the cleaning rod in the forestock that would fit your description to a "t"... No charge for the rust ;)
