Hey guys,
just bought a browning hi-power T series off the EE and i took it out yesterday and the slide locks open on the second to last shot on every magazine. I have to release the slide stop to fire the last round and chamber the cartridge. I have two different magazines so that is not the issue. I may try some different ammunition, yesterday i was using
Federal american eagle
total metal jacket 147 grain
velocity-960
energy-295
I wanted to get 4 different makes of ammunition yesterday but Hub sports only had the one.
Does this sound like it could be an ammunition problem or could it be something else?
First thing i will do is try various ammo but i thought i would see if this sounds familiar to anyone.
Thanks
Andre

The slide stop gets pushed up by the mag top plate ( follower ) when the last round leaves the mag.
My first thought was a defective mag but you have changed mags so that is
not the issue. The mags are double stack but that should not be an issue either.

Try giving the area where the slide stop & mechanism is a really good cleaning followed but some good quality lube. Maybe some dirt is pushing it up.

This is probably not the problem but there is a sight chance it might be. Take a deep breath.

Relax.

It might be you pushing the slide up.

A friend of mine had a similar problem with his gun. We were at the range and he shot it and the slide would lock back. He had a gunsmith shooting with us try it. Worked fine. He was told to hold his thumbs lower on the gun and then shoot the gun. The problem went away. It honestly looked like the gun was malfunctioning when my friend was shooting it at first. He was unknowingly pushing up on the slide release.

Cheap fix if it is the problem. ;)

Aside from the comments from the other CGN members that are right on point, I do have a question about what brand mags you might be using, because I have had different experiences depending on the brand,

There are reviews of the brands if you take a little time and google.

My recollections in terms of rating is that the inglis is the best, though hard to find, and you have to pin it, factory mags and mec gar are good, but to avoid the triple kkk and a few others. Hope you have the problems solved with the advice so far, and then spent some time to run the mags through the paces, which should do anyway with semi autos, 1911's included. good luck.

Hi guys,
Thanks for the suggestions i will look into them all. I've eliminated the thumb possibility due to being left-handed but that would have been a nice easy fix. Keep your suggestions coming if you have any and i will update periodically
Thanks
Andre

Actually quite a few of the Inglis mags are worn out now unless they have been in civvie hands for years and properly cared for.

remove the slide, put the slide stop in the frame and insert the mags with one round in them and see what it's doing. It is either the mags as the slide stop is not under spring power except from the mag follower or the S.S. is somehow bent/damaged.

It could be the way you're holding it as another poster pointed out, but then you would think that it would not happen only on the last round.

Will it do it if you cycle it manually?

(I have had some problems with 147 gr truncated rounds when I used an aftermarket mag. The Browning mag worked ok. It had to do with the angle of the mag follower and the lips)

You reminded me of the problem I had with after market mags for my CZ75. I had to slightly bend the springs so the follower was at a better angle for my gun. Afterwards I didn't have any problems with all three mags.
