1944 Maltby? There were some incorrectly marked. Someone got the wrong die out of the toolroom?
Yes. They were incorrectly marked. Might have been the bombs falling all around put someone off. Not a variant.
Perhaps Maltby, for some long forgotten reason defined their own Mk I* version- it wouldn't be the first time different British manufacturers had slightly different versions of the same "mark". Another No. 4 anomaly are some BSA's marked No. 4 Mk I"- I've seen a number of them. For the rifle in the OP this marking is neither a good nor a bad thing.
