I removed the old European 3/4" sling swivels from my Model 96 sporter so I can put on some standard studs, issue is the existing holes are a little too big. I would like to use the existing holes...is there anything I can do ? epoxy maybe ?

If the hole isn't too large, epoxy should work well. It may not hurt to ream out the hole a wee bit to get into fresh wood.

If you use epoxy, put some wax on the swivel threads so the swivel can be removed after the epoxy sets.

If the hole is too large for just epoxy, drill out the hole(1/4") then epoxy in a piece of dowel. After the epoxy sets, re-drill for the swivel.

I keep odd pieces of walnut around just for this kind of stuff. Cut off butts from recoil pad installation work great.

Splinter off a few pieces and tap them tightly into the hole with some waterproof glue or epoxy. After the repair is cured, cut the splinters off even with the stock drill a pilot hole for the screw and install.

I have done it all at once a few times, as well, putting just enough splinters in the hole to make a good tight fit for the screw. Cut them a bit shorter than the hole, add the glue and install the screw.

Saves drilling a pilot hole after curing, but be sure to put some paste wax on the screw as Mauser98 has posted, or the screw will be in there permanently.
