I'd like to poll the collective wisdom of experienced hunters from our many, varied, regions.

What do you use as a shooting aid in the field? Please also mention what type of terrain and hunting you are doing. I'm mainly curious if most use a sling as a shooting aid, but let me know if you use a bipod, sticks or a pack. If you use a sling do you just have a simple strap and use a hasty sling? Anyone use a Rhodesian, Ching or 1907 style loop sling?

Mostly trees stumps etc for big game but bipod or shooting sticks for hunting varmints. Was thinking about a bog pod for this season just not sure if I would want to pack it.My 2 cents.

A good sling is tremendously useful for steadying a rifle in field shooting, provided you use it properly.

If stand hunting then nothing....

For the rest of my hunting, mostly slings for spot and stalk through hardwoods or an improvised rest (usually my pack) for predator....

For many years , when shooting in the field or swamp lands , over 100 yards , I use "X" sticks . If dry land then the sitting sticks
which are 3 feet long. If wet lands , then the standing ones , which are about 6 feet long . Have killed lots with both lengths .
I make them out of 3/4" dowel for the 3 ' and maple saplings about 1" dia. for the 6 ' ones. With this method I can use any
rifle of choice without adding "Stuff" to all my rifles. ,,,,,,,,,,,,, works for me ,,,, Frank

I shoot from the hip, usually with a straw in my mouth. :p

Would love to get a US Military/Garand style sling. hard to get in Canada. Use leather standard sling.

I have used shooting sticks when hunting coyotes at a stand. I usually shoot off a pack when mountain hunting. I use a hasty sling often when spot and talk or still hunting.

I recently bought a Rhodesian sling from Andy's leather. Looking forward to becoming proficient with it.

I have one spot in particular overlooking a swamp where long shots are more likely than not. I lashed three long sticks together in a tripod, African style, and leave them at that spot. First time I used that spot I missed a chance at a nice buck while trying to find a tree to rest on. By the time I got settled in, he'd vanished. For the rest of my area, there are lots of trees to rest on or against, or the shot is so close it's not really necessary. For the buck I shot last year, I had my left fist pushed up against the trunk of a tree, with my thumb and forefinger forming a bit of a 'V'. I rested my rifle on that.

Backpack, handy stump or branch for long shots. Otherwise I use my sling to steady the rifle usually in the kneeling position. When hunting in timber a quick shot in the standing position is typical.
