Whether going out for a few hours or a few days, a hunter isn't going to carry his rifle in his hands the whole time.

So in regards to rifle shooting slings, what sling do you find the most Comfortable, Versatile (i.e. potential number of positions to carry gun: over one shoulder, two, like a backpack), Durable and Ease of Use for Adjustments.

If you know where you can buy it and the cost as well, that would be great! Too bad we can't makes polls on this forum...

I like a Browning Xcellerator as they can be slung 2 point normal as well as back pack fashion and in a pinch a hasty sling.

I have them on most of my hunting rifles.

Most stores with hunting supplies carry them.

Thanks for the input! Is this more of a carry sling rather than a bonafide (loop) shooting sling?

It's more of a carry sling.

My primary use for a rifle sling is as an aid to accurate shooting from field positions like sitting or kneeling.
My favourite is the "Latigo Sling" from "Brownells." It has a loop with a keeper that snugs up tightly and for me eliminates the need for bipod for varmint hunting. It is made from quality leather and cost about $ 60 US.....Can also be used in over shoulder carry mode.

Hey Pete,

Thanks for the input. That was actually the first one I found when I googled it and then I was curious if there were others out there that might be cheaper and/or better. How do you find it for comfort on the shoulder. Like Geologist mentioned he can do with his slings, can the latigo be "slung 2 point normal as well as back pack fashion"?

Hi Boomer,

Nice looking sling as well! How is it for comfort and how many ways can you carry with it? It looks a little on the narrow side, so how is the overall stability for use as a shooting aid?

Despite having become unreasonably expensive to acquire in Canada, I still favor the Galco Safari Ching Sling above all others . . .

The Safari Ching Sling has the same profile as a cobra sling, 1" at the swivels, widening to two inches, where it splits to allow your arm to enter, with a 1" horseshoe strap connecting the two halves of the cobra sling. You hold the rifle at the forend in the normal way with your support hand, then pull the horseshoe strap onto the back of your support arm with your shooting hand. If the sling is properly adjusted, it provides a very stable shooting platform from all supported shooting positions.

The sling is comfortable to carry even a heavy rifle with, and is suitable for either strong side muzzle up carry, or muzzle down African carry on the off side. My preference is what Ross Seyfried dubbed the jaeger carry. I hang the rifle from my left shoulder muzzle forward, then force the barrel behind my left arm. This provides a very secure carry, yet allows fast access to the rifle. If the barrel lies below the elbow, its more comfortable, but less secure, above the elbow its more secure, but less comfortable.

First step of the jaeger carry . . .

For carry purposes, this is a two point normal.......No backpack option.

Anyone have any input on the 3-point tactical sling? I've been interested in getting one for awhile now, but I've never been able to find anything promising.

Call me an old fart and a traditionalist, but I still love the old Lee Enfield web slings. I have them on all my hunting rifles and still love them the most. For me, when it's at the right setting to wrap around my arm to steady the shot, it's also at the right length for shoulder carry. They are very quick to adjust and the rolled edges make for a comfortable sit on the shoulder. Nowadays the biggest hurdle is finding the wide sling swivels that will accommodate the enfield slings. I believe you need 1-1/4" swivels for those. When I'm togged out in my hunting gear, I adjust the sling so that I get a good comfortable wrap around my arm and (as I'd mentioned) it just works out that it's a good length for slinging the rifle on my shoulder. I have some older leather slings as well and don't get me wrong, they're just fine but I still lean toward old tech. You can still pick them up at gun shows for $10-$15. As I said, that's just me.
