Hello all, I have my dad's old Mossberg shotty 12 gauge, it is sloppy working the action, anyone experienced this and can help me tighten it up a bit?

That's why I sold my only Mossberg pump years ago. Darn thing rattled all over the place.

Did it knock the crap out of you? My dad's has no choke a long barrel maybe a 30 inch and it kicks so hard my 350 lb friend got knocked back haha, cops shot it, but did the group up for support haha

It's the way Mossberg designs their forend and action bars, and it is normal, not a defect. My 870's have next to no play in the forend but my Mossberg moves side to side.

The action bars on the 88/500/590 are really thin compared to the 870. They all seem to have loose pumps, it doesn't stop them from functioning though.

Sadly mines the 70s or 80s model ahha, it has up, down, side to side and front to back, if tightened the nut down, still the same

I used to allow myself to be bothered by that, but not anymore. The fact is this: it doesn't really matter. Now that I know (that it doesn't matter), I don't care anymore.

This is what CWO John M. Miller said (speaking about the U.S. Rifle M-14), in his book The M14 Owner's Guide and Match Conditioning Instructions (see page 168):

...Note: accuracy does not seem to be affected by the handguard unless it drags the stock. Lateral movement has no effect. However, hand guard movement bothers some shooters. One of our biggest gunsmithing obstacles is excessive headspace, not on the rifle, but between the ears! So if it bugs 'em, fix it! Place a spot of silicon R.T.V. rubber (bathtub sealer) under the handguard at the retaining clip location, and install it on the rifle. When it cures, there is no movement in the guard, and it is easily removed later...

both my 590a1's rattle like a baby's toy. My 870's have nowhere near that movement.

Normal and not a big deal at all.
