I had a almost new 870 land in my lap. It is mint and I would like to not modify it in any way that I cannot change back.

I have a 2 round mag extension that I want to install but be able to take off later. Do the slotted mag followers from GG&G and the like work, or do they jam up?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

I don't think you can find anything that isn't an improvement over the factory follower, just be aware that some of the longer aftermarket followers can reduce your capacity by one.

I use S&J hardware followers in all my shottys, They work great and never had a jam. I just like the Green high-Viz color that is easy to see empty .

In terms of metal followers like the GG&G and the Vang Comp (I have both) ... no, they don't jam up unless there's another specific problem with your SG.
I have read however many years ago metal followers were a known problem causing wear to the receiver.

Swapped all my followers over to the S&J stuff because same as DILLIGAF I like the green hi-viz.

You will have to remove the dimples in the mag tube for it to work. In other words it's a permanent mod.

That is what I am trying to ask. GG&G makes a slotted follower that is supposed to not need the dimples removed. I am asking if anyone has any experience with these and how they work. I have used the other ones and they work fine, but not for this application.

Ah... sorry, I did't answer you're question directly. Wasn't paying close enough attention I guess.

Yes, I purchased a slotted GG&G follower for my wife's 20 gauge because it has dimples and it's worked perfectly.

S&J were the first to make a aftermarket slotted follower.
13yrs ago. Still thr number one sold after market follower in the world.
We have sold hundreds of thousands of then all over the world.
We have 5 different types now.

Hey S&J, I ordered a shotgun part off of your website two and half weeks ago. Got the confirmation email right away. My bank site showed a pending charge that disappeared two days later. I emailed sales@.... got no response. If I log into your site the order status is "processing.......".
I'm trying to give you the benefit of the doubt, but I asked around at the club and your reviews are less than stellar in the custom server dept...

The others seem to be missing the point. The slotted follower will work without issue in your shotgun with the existing magazine cap.

You cannot use a mag extension without getting rid of the dimples. The follower will install but if it rotates inside the magazine tube it will not be able to get past the dimples and either prevent you from loading all the rounds or worse could get jammed.

Simon can you please explain the different types of Rem 870 followers you have and the application of each style? Website does not give much info on the differences between type 1, 2, 3. Is the leg the only real diff? And does this type reduce mag capacity by one? My 870P does not have the mag tube dimples.
Thanks

Does it have a slotted follower now? The slots are there so it can be installed past the magazine tube dimples. Any extension will require removing the dimples.

^I'll chime in and be the first to say my Remington/factory follower actually works better than my S&J one did. The S&J one seemed to get hung-up where the mag extension joined the mag tube, but the factory one (looser fitting, flexible) always ran fine. Believe me, I wanted the S&J one to work because the Remington one felt so cheap...just wasn't the case. Could have been something out of spec on that particular gun/extension but I regretfully..went back to the Remington one. Zero issues. I'm open to the idea of going back to one and trying it...but the shipping would probably cost more than the part and as mentioned...it cycles fine with the Remmy orange.

The remington ones were never an issue before the internet. I'm down to 5 wingmasters now. All of them 40 yrs (ish) old. They all have the original followers and all work like silk. Just sayin.

I wouldn't be surprised if older 870s had a smoother finish inside the magazines tubes and so don't chew up followers like the newer guns do?

I also wouldn't be surprised if the factory followers themselves have been downgraded, just as everything else has.
