dont worry, this isnt another bear defence thread :D

im picking up an 870 with 12" barrel, ghost rings .. just curious what kind of success other shooters have had with slugs at say.. 25 50 and 100 yds

i know every firearm is different, so i dont need that rant.. just after others' experiences

i have fired a few slugs at 50 yards with a smooth bore 8.5 dlask with a front sight only and can hit a eight inch target ,not great i know but i plan a rear sight and a little experimenting with different ammo . its a fun gun and hearing protection is a must with these short barrel guns . let us know how you do and have fun .

im sure ghost rings would improve that, but in turn they have other disadvantages.

There are none that I can think of unless an individual simply objects to the appearance of rifle sights on a shotgun. The ghost ring and post are faster than a bead, and a flat top post gives a much better index of elevation than does a bead. Consider as well the number of manufacturers who mount the bead directly on the barrel with no pedestal to match the height if the receiver. With such a set up you will surely shoot over your target with slugs. I've done some decent slug shooting with a bead for a front sight, but there are better options.

I have a squires bingham 20 inch cylinder bore, with winchester 2 3/4 slugs with the ramp all the way up on the rear sight it has excellent grouping but at 50 yards if I aim dead on the slug hit about 6 inches low everytime. Quite the kick.

In comparing slug performance between 20" and 14" rifled-factory 870 barrels on the same gun I haven't noticed a difference in accuracy between the two lengths.

The only difference is the sight adjustments. The 14" barrel tends to shoot a little higher so the rear sight position is different between the two barrels.

dont get me wrong, i like ghost rings. i just meant that they are not ideal all-around. theyre the best sights for slugs, but not so great for shot.

My 12.5" Grizz is super accurate with slugs. Surprised the sh*t out of me the first few times shooting @100 yards. Ghost Ring sights are the cats meow in my book, took many a bird with her this year.

No idea about a 12" but in 3 gun matches (with my 14") at 35m I can shoot 5 slugs into an area the size of my fist as fast as I can rack it.
