Why is it that 12GA sabot slug guns don't get mentioned in the same sentence when there's talk about heavy hitting 45-70 type brush guns?
Guide gun can hold 4 Rds and 870 can be made to hold 6-7 rounds. You can also take your 870 on goose hunt on monday and bear hunt on friday. Try that with your Marlin!

I load 575gr Sabots at 1700fps. Fairly accurate out to 150-175yds. Then falls flat on its face. The 45-70 will have further down range accuracy. But the shear power of that slug at close range is devastating.

Hard on the shoulder.

If one is in a target rich environment such as wild boar hunting the twelve gauge guns more commonly seen are smoothbore slug shooting firearms.
Any 356/358/375/444/45-70 lever rifles are less expensive to feed versus most any modern shotgun sabot launcher.

IMO, your looking at what I'd call 45-70Gov Trap-Door ammo. The pictured Federal 45-70Gov ammo is usable in 'all' 45-70's, Trap-Door's, Levers and Strong Action's(Ruger#1). So yes I'd agree, using Trap-Door ammo in the Marlin 1895 45-70Gov would leave you at a disadvantage.
When you compare comercial 45-70Gov Lever Action Ammo, like Buffalo Bore or Garrett, the 45-70Gov exceeds the typical* 12gauge. Buffalo Bore has 45-70Gov Lever ammo with ~3500ft-lbs of Muzzle Energy.
*The non-typical 12gauge load would be the Brenneke 656grain slug @ MV 1600fps & ME~3800ft-lbs.

In my Marlin 1895GBL 45-70Gov, my 300 grain Sierra handloads have an average muzzle velocity of 2150fps & muzzle energy ~3000 ft-lb, breach preasure ~28,000CUP.
My shoulder has imposed a similar 45-70Gov breach preasure limit as Garrett ammo, 33,000Cup/35,000psi.

smooth bore shotguns are pretty common in the conservation service both here and in the USA so I would say yes, the 12ga slug gun with the right ammo would suffice.
When I first go into hunting I wanted a bolt action slug gun so bad...... never did end up buying one but always thought i might like to have one. Was gonna buy a derya mk12 semi auto as a slug gun but they went and banned those.....

One advantage a 45-70 has over a 12g slug gun is one can easily reload in the field when needed. A bag full of one's favorite bullets, favorite powder, LRP, a Lee Classic Reloaded and a mallet. All this fits in a very small travel tool box or back pack. Hard to do that for a 12g sabot.

I have both….

Running an 870 Express Mag… nothing fancy. Lots of slug rounds through an 18.5” factory barrel

I really love the simplicity of the 870 for handling, but the balance point at the steel receiver (read…. Cold in November deer season) is kinda annoying….

The Marlin on the other hand is just sweet to carry one handed…..

Muzzle velocities and energies don’t tell the whole story. At close range the slug is the hammer of Thor, but it can’t carry that energy or maintain velocity to 100 yds the way the 45-70 can. The difference in ballistic coefficients greatly favours the 45-70 aerodynamically, giving it the higher terminal velocity and penetration at 100 yds and beyond.

you can do the same thing with a 12g shell. But I agree the 45-70 has more practical use.

all i know is my buddies 12 with quality hard hitting slugs put a dent in a steel plate at close range. My 45-70 punched a toonie sized hole and sent the same plate flying. I carry a 30-30 around mostly now though lol

If one handloads the 12 bore rifled guns with full bore, hardcast boollits in the 750-900 gr range pushed at a leisurely 1100-1200 fps, they would see a dramatic increase in killing power over the 45-70 (Which I love by the way.) on the biggest stuff we can offer up in our country. Keep the distance inside 80 yds to get best results. Most folks won't find the boollit after the game is down unless they be good at prospecting.

Me .731" 835 gr paradox boolit from my Old West mold is on the right. The little buggers be a 440 gr .500 S&W and .58 Lee REAL boolit of same weight.
