I got a rifled barrel for my 870 now that my kid is shooting my 20g. Anyway I just got back from the range and am not happy .6 different kinds of slug and I could not keep a group on a pie plate at 30 yards .I took the 22 along to make sure I let the slug gun cool between shots run a brush threw it every 4 shots ..it just sucks ....Any ideas. ..Dutch

Are you using sabots? The rifled barrel works best with saboted slugs. Rifled slugs are really designed for smooth barrels to impart the necessary spin. My Remington 20 ga. will put 5 sabots into a 4" at 50 yds. all day long.

This is the Remington slug barrel with rifle sight from the factory .yes I was shooting Sabot slugs .Hornady. remington. Fusion and several other brands .just no luck getting a group could not keep them on a pie plate at 30 yards and this is a new barrel .I have been shooting slug gun's for 20 years and this one stumps me.I do have a saddle mount I may try with a scope. Was hoping to keep it light and easy to carry for dogging .Dutch

Could be the open sights giving you grief. Mount a scope on it and see if that changes things. If it does, I guess you have your answer. I had a rifled barrel for my mossberg 935 and same thing happened. Since the receiver is drilled for a scope mount, I put a scope on the gun and things dramatically changed. I then aquired a rifled barrel with a cantileaver mount and the gun shot even better. It sucks that you may need a scope when you didnt intend to have one, but I guess thats what may need to happen if you want tight groups

I keep things pretty simple with my break action scatterguns. Do not know anything about your shotgun but would the barrel not seat properly perhaps and cause poor accuracy?

Hey Dutch, if that barrel was used previously it could be leaded up due to using foster type slugs in it. If it is new a good scrubbing won't hurt.

Hi Dutch,

Darryl may have the answer for you. About 25 years ago I tried some then brand new sabot slugs (BRI's) out of a rifled barrel I imported from the US. I rough sighted it in with lead foster slugs first, then unsuccessful tried to sight in the sabots; turned out I leaded-up the bore with the fosters really bad. I cleaned the barrel super well and all was good after that. Rifled barrels are just for use with sabot slugs. WK

Slug guns have come a long way in the past 15-20 years. He should be cloverleafing (or better) at 30m with his setup. I cloverleaf at 30m with a smoothbore, rifle sighted slug barrel and rifled slugs.

It is a brand new barrel. I scribed it between every 4 ,5 shots with brass brush. As I have said o have been shooting slug gun's for 20 years. .this one just has me stumped. Dutch

If you can find them Remington Buck hammers may help. I tried two rifled slug guns over the years and have always gone back to the smooth bore type. Cheaper ammo and still good enough for 75 to 9-0 yards most days. Hope something works for you.

Darryl
