Slug Guns in Rifle Prohibited Zones

Is a slug gun with a smoothbore barrel considered a shotgun or a rifle in a hunting area that prohibits use of rifles?

If there's no rifling... I would assume not considered a rifle. Chech the regs for appropriate firearms for definitive answers.

We hunt shotgun only area in 65 in Ontario. We use slugs if no one is dogging. Never had a problem.

"No rifle" and "Single Shot prohibited (or multiple projectile only) " and "shotgun only" are 3 different things

Make sure you know what is what.

I would guess if the gun shoots shotgun shells it would be considered a shotgun. So a savage 220 or 210 would be fine for a shotgun only season.

It has nothing to do with your barrel, as you could not use a rifle with a smoothbore either.

Rifled slug barrels are permitted.

And yes, smooth bore .22 s are still rifles.

Yup as other posters stated... Shotgun uses shells, Rifle uses cartridges. Smoothbore, rifled, doesn't make a difference. If you are concerned about areas like southern Ontario that are regulated to .275 caliber or lower, any modern shotgun is still legal to hunt with with or without a rifled barrel. We use Slug guns in 12 and 20 guage with rifled barrels and Hornady SST sabots to take deer (controlled season and pest control on federal land) and for pest coyotes when preserving the pelt isn't an issue. All good and all legal, hunt with a few C.O.'s and Federal game officers from time to time.

A shotgun is a shotgun, regardless if the barrel has rifling or you're shooting slugs

The hunting regulations in your province are the hunting regulations in your province, regardless of what the hunting regulations in other provinces allow in their "no rifle" zones/seasons. So make sure you follow them, regardless of what advice you get over the internet from people in other jurisdictions.
