I'm kinda on a budget right now so instead of buying a brand new .243 for Blacktail hunting I'm going to purchase a slug barrel for my 12g. I live BC's lowermainland and my hunting spot is a jungle with a few large blacktails living like ghosts in the area. Normally i shoot a 7mm mag but its a pain in the ass for this style of hunting. It's way too long. what is the max affective range for a 3'' slug and is this a good route to take. thinking of putting a red dot sight on it or some other kind of small tactical scope seeing how there are no sights on the barrel. I will be stalking and also sitting in ground blind. Help on this would be great for I know nothing about slugs

A slug will be better in 'jungle' than a 7mm. A 3" slug has lots of felt recoil and you really don't need them. A 2.75" slug will do everything a 3" will do without as much felt recoil.
You do have to try a box of as many brands as you can to find the ammo your shotgun shoots best. Then sight in at 100 yards, if your new barrel is rifled. 50 yards, if it isn't.
Slugs drop quickly past there, but will be dangerous well past 200 yards.
A red dot will do, but so will a low magnification scope. Your shotgun drilled and tapped already?
This'll give you an idea of slug ballistics. Remington certainly isn't the only ammo though.

This is a good article about slugs in general.

Why not get a slug barrel with sights. My 870 super mag combo has sights on the slug barrel.

The brand of shotgun I have is a Hatsan Optima there slug barrels don't come with sights. Although my Turkey barrel came stock with some trueglow sight which work great for turkey and just recently for yotes on the run.

That was a great article Sunray. I learned quite a bit reading it. Thanks. The barrel I ordered has a cantilever style scope rail so you don't have to resight every time you change your barrel out. so I'm told

I shoot a Beretta Pintail with the barrel epoxied to the action. It shoots every bit as well as most rifles. I would suggest you stick to 2 3/4" slugs as they seem to stabilize better in most shotguns. I shoot Winchester supreme 385 gr Partition Golds and have shot accurate groups off a banch to 250 yards. Hit a deer at a paced 227 yards 4 years ago. Bullet drop at that range is significant and the slug is slower than hell but 385 grs doing 800 fps still makes a nice hole. I've also read some good stuff about the Hornady SST's but they don't shoot well out of my gun...... Good luck
