i just picked up my first shotgun the other day, a Remington 870 with a 20" cylinder bore and 26" barrel w/ Remington choke.

can i shoot slugs out of the barrel with the Remington choke? ive had a few people tell me that i could and a few say i couldnt.

We should really stickie a 'slug' post.

You can shoot standard 'rifled' slugs out of the remington choke. They may suffer for accuracy, but it shouldn't hurt your gun.

All modern slugs are made to pass safely through a full choke.
The main reason for this is to protect the ammo manufacturers for liability
Actually most rifled slugs (foster type) work quite well in a full choke... but will perform better in Improved and Cylinder Bore.
The diagonal fins on the side of rfled slugs are what gives them thier name, but these fins do not fit tightly in Cylinder tubes, nor do they cause rotation in the barrel. :?
The wad is what seals the gasses and keeps the slug centred in your bore.
All the fins are for is to allow for compression as the slug passes through a choke and to spin the slug slightly as air passes over them for stability in flight
