Hey everyone, I have a newbie question regarding slugs.
Just bought a case of remington managed recoil sluggers for my bear gun. Just wondering if there's any significant loss in effectiveness, compared to a regular slug, when used for predator defense. I understand that the lower velocity means less energy behind the slug, but within 50m will that even be an issue? Or should I just save those for the range and stick to my fiocchi slugs when I'm out in the woods? Thanks in advance :)

You would have to chrony the velocity to know for sure. There is a loss of effectiveness if the impact velocity is subsonic, but you could easily shoot into a mud bank for a side by side comparison of the wound volume and penetration of a managed recoil slug and a high velocity slug to see if there is much difference. Factory Brenneke slugs (600 gr @ 1350 fps) are 250 fps slower than Federal or Challenger (1600 fps), yet they are my top choice for bear work. If you are going to practice with a low velocity slug but carry a high velocity slug, be sure your gun is sighted for the high velocity stuff, and shoot a few rounds in pratice. If you are outdoors quite a bit you will find that shotgun shells corrode much faster than rifle ammo. When I carry a shotgun for an extended period of time I'll swap out the shells every 30 days or so and keep the weathered ones for practice.

Good idea, I'll try the side by side slug comparison. The remingtons are advertised at 1200 fps vs the fiocchi 1560 fps. If there doesn't seem to be too much difference at ~50m I'll probably carry the managed recoil slugs.
I'm probably not outdoors often enough to notice shell corrosion, but I'll make sure I don't mix whatever I carry back in with fresh shells. Thanks for the tips Boomer! :)
