OK, stupid question. Why do factory 12 ga "rifled" slugs (for smoothbores) all seem to have roll crimps? Is it because they can hold the slug in place better? Accuracy?Something to do with pressures? And what would happen if you loaded Foster-type slugs using a fold crimp?

I will try to answer this one but no expert but i do load slugs ( Lyman slug in avatar)
roll crimp probably stated when they loaded round ball in paper shells (12g = 12 balls to the lb, 20g= 20 balls to the lb ) it also made them easy to distinguish slugs from shot roll crimp was what held the shell together
Lyman shotgun reloading book gives data from roll crimp or fold crimp from easy to shoot to **** that stings (rub sholder)
I have shot app 300 rounds of the lyman sabot slug through my 870 smoothbore all fold crimp-- even 25 in one day (light loads) and yes paper is boring so i have put clays out at 100y to practice then shot 50 rounds 308 and gone home with no problem and not been stiff or anything.
I load slugs in a different colour hull and mark it with a marker
casting slugs and loading them cost is 4-5$ for 25
