Went out today and sighted in the scope on my mossberg 500 scope barrel.

at 25 50 and 75 I was grouping in essentially the same holes (hard to say for sure because of the MASSIVE holes, but seemed to be VERY tight. then at 100 things opened up considerably ~3"-4" groups.

Guy at the range said that was pretty impressive for 100 yards, but i feel like it should be better. Don't know how that extra 25 yeards can make that much difference.

am i nuts?

That sounds like pretty good shooting to me as well. I would advise you to go back where you purchased the slugs, and buy up the rest. With a little luck they'll be from the same lot.

it has come to my attention that i posted this in black/green shotguns and not hunting/sporting ... apologies on that guys.

mods can delete / move if they see fit.

Out of a smoothbore barrel, I'd say you're doing great.
I have long been a proponent of Challenger slugs, they seem to shoot well out of my gun. However, I will be conducting an extensive "Challenger vs. Score" test before deer season.

Its my observation that slugs can drastically vary from one gun to another. For general bear protection in a shotgun with no iron sights go for something that hits hardest. For accurate distance shooting you should try several brands to see what works. If you like zombie shoots then go for light recoil and good prices.

It all depends what you're looking for.
