Small amount of pitting on '49 SKS...

There's an area on my handguard ferrule with a finger tip sized amount of pitting. Any advice to prevent it from spreading?

My 1955 has some pitting in the same area, has been like that for years. Keep it well oiled and it should be alright, mine has never spread.
