Howdy fellow shooters. I was recently "elected" to be the pistol director of our small club of 80 members. 35 of those members shoot handguns. I shoot pistols myself and was trying to get a general idea of how to put on a pistol shoot that is fun to watch as well as fun to do. As far as I know, nobody shoots IPSC or anything along that lines. I do know that we are all jut plain jane target shooters.
I have watched the IPSC shoots on you tube and do think they are cool to watch, but I also know that most shooters are on a budget and this style may not be financially their "cup of tea".
SO........here i am looking for suggestions for putting on a fun shoot for all to enjoy.
Ideas that I do have are as follows:

-5 shots standard paper shoot, closest to bull.
-5 gongs 5 shots as fast as possible

I use 5 shots for the revolver shooters. Make it a standard round count.
Not sure if its advisable to mix the revolver shooters with the pistol shooters. I guess it all depends how many of each and whether they have both.
What distance to targets would you guys suggest for a fun distance? 25 yds to close?
Prizes. What kind of prizes would you guys suggest for such a shoot? Would you think prizes as well as points. My ex father in law is a curler and they offer prizes at their bonspiels as well as points. At the end of the year the team (4 guys to a team) would get a trophy. Of course pistol shoots are an individual sport, so shooter with most points wins a trophy.
I am totally open to suggestions from you all. I think most of you shooters are been there done that kind of guys who enjoy IPSC now and other disciplines of shooting?

why limit your thinking to IPSC, we are a small club here in northern BC, and we shoot IDPA.

our pistol range is 50mx50m square, and we could set up 2 IDPA stages in that easily,IDPA is revolver nuetral, a 5 round stage is easily do able.... as is a 12 round stage.

think outside the box,

as far as prizes, cleaning suppies, bottles of CLP that sort of thing always work great and are usually easy to get from "sponsers"

hell you pester your local shop enough and tell them if they supply a banner ou will hang it on the range... in return for door prizes :)

Do you guys have a "pistol" league? as in, having the guys meet at the range on set days for a "match" of 20/30/40rds?

We've been doing so at our clubs, and it's working great. We have our match on Tuesday and Friday evening, we shoot a 1/2 NRA bulleye match.
- 10 Shots, slow at 20y (max 10 minutes)
- 10 Shots (2 relays of 5 shoots in 20sec) again at 20y
- 10 shots (2 relay of 5 shots in 10sec) again at 20y

Once a year we have a turkey shoot where one of the match is shot on a bingo cards... shooters with the most point wins a turkey :)

You can always adjust the time/distance to match the haptitudes of the shooters...

gun games

You could do a stake shoot, set up 2x2 stakes at 7 to 10 yards mark two lines about a foot a part all shots between the lines fastest time to cutting the stake in half wins. Can be shot from the bench so no holster and any thing from 22lr to 44mag revolvers ,autos ,open class ,iron sights un limited mags and ammo lots of fun to watch.

We do the stump shoot regularly here in Terrace. Dave B. had one at the 3 Gun Match a couple of weeks ago. We probably will do one after our BC Provincials next year.

Hey those are awesome ideas. Thanx guys.

Westicle.......IPSC was the only shooting discipline that popped into my head as of me typing it up there. :)

Jackenape......that sounds like a pretty cool idea. I'd love to see a video of it to see how it works.

Sillymike......nope no pistol league, but I do like the sounds of it. A good way to hone your skills using this method. Cool. I like this one

Tornado45......now THAT would be cool to see. I love that idea. We have loads of small alder trees about this size (anywhere from pecker pole size all the way to firewood size) surrounding our entire range, actually growing on the berms. This would be a good way to keep them from overtaking the ranges. Do you think those would work as well?

2 people. 5 balloons on one side, 5 balloons on the other side and one in the middle. First person to shoot their 5 and the middle one wins. Have a round robin and keep it goin till someone beats em all.

the other thing that is easy is bowling pin shooting, but if you cannot find bowling pins just cut up some 4x4's about 12 inches long and first one to knock them off the table wins..... notice I said OFF the table. (use cheap walmart special card tables)

the ballon thing works too.... :)

Paintballs glued to golf tees, mounted on a 2x4 or something. Makes a challenging target depending how far out you put them.
As for prizes--why not get a couple of the Norc Woodsman from Marstar and have that as 1st prize and work down from there? I don't know what the financial situation of your club is, so your call, but you'd make the money back on side raffles or charge a couple bucks per shooting round.

Paintballs is a cool idea as I actually have an old bag of them leftover from 2 seasons ago. Actually, that would be a good effect for the .22 shooters. Give them a little "show" when they hit their target.
OR......
stick them to the bullseye for the paper punchers. Real cool effect for the pistol shooters. Yeehaww

Finances are next weeks meeting. Oh yay!!! :(

Oooh bowling pin shoot sounds fun. There is a bowling alley not far away. Hmmm, I wonder if they'd notice? ;)

btw Westicle, how's the weather up in FSJ?

weather sucks, ice rain everynight and the streets are like skating rink till about 3pm, then it is a slush-a-thon..... accidents left right and center and I stay home as much as I can :)

It's not exactly an "Action" match but our Club holds an annual Turkey shoot at Christmas. Lots of fun and draws a large crowd.

It consists of a drawing of turkey on an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper with a grid over it. Each box of the grid is scored from 1 to 3. At 20 yards all you see is the turkey, so it's all about chance. Prizes awarded by score.
