Have started a small repair for an action. Thought you may like to see the first step a small tig weld on some cast steel. The tang was broken off as a previous brazed repair failed. A real struggle to get that old brass removed before the weld.
Can post up finished job when complete. This is a time consuming tiny weld that can't be rushed. 6 tiny welds .040" electrode es70s2 .035 filler rod @ 40 amps dc.foot pedal and a steady hand.Clamp set up with copper backing and No rum tonight "LOL"
Forgot to mention with respect to size the screw hole size is .185" in diameter. Not much bigger than a 17hmr bullet.

Looks good. Depending on the penetration you may want to weld it from the back side as well. I just did a tang weld that had been brazed as well. I agree it's a bugger to make sure you get all the brass ground off. That together with the varying quality of cast steel can make it interesting.

Read the post there are 6 welds 2 on top 2 on bottom and 1 on each side and was first tacked and then all was v'd out before the weld, what you see is only the top .with a thin dremel cut off wheel and then cleaned the tang as well as the filler rod with acetone.
I have been tig welding for 30+ years and do enjoy a challenge.Cast steel isn't a real concern but cast iron is a real crap shoot sometimes as it has elevated carbon percentages compared to cast steel.

Very nice welding. A good way to remove old brazing rod is to glass bead it. Then check for remaining brass by applying cold blue. The yellow of the brass stands out on the blacking steel.

That the plan. We want to remove all traces of brass before welding. The cold blue makes any remaining brass stand out so it can be removed.

I have a bead blast cabinet I will try that on a upcoming project thanks. That brass is a pia if it isn't removed before tig welding.Bin there done that.
