which primers are better or more consistent winchester WSR or CCI 400's?
I know CCI benchrest are better but the store I am looking at has only these 2 brands.

thanks,
Justin

They are all reliable. The Win are hottest ,then Fed then CCI........not sure where the Rem fits in never used them................Harold

primers are like powder and bullets, they will be different from lot to lot. I've used primers from all makers that were both consistent and inconsistent. I've even had lots of CCIBR primers that were regulated to plinking status only.

Sounds like the old argument, Ford or Chev. Take your pick, whatever they have. I don't think there is any way that you could see a difference in them.

Just for ####s and giggles one day I tested the ES of my .223 using Win Primers vs CCI (I used either 450 or BR4's, I don't recall which) and found that exact same charges using the Win primers I had ES (Extreme Spreads) of 100fps. The CCI had less than 20fps ES over 10 rounds.

I've never had a misfire with any makers primer that wasn't my fault.

I've also never had an accuracy problem with any makers primer in hunting rifles either.

I've only noticed any real difference in Bench Rest rifles. Then the difference has been minimal but enough to be noticable.

For a BR rifle, I like to buy at least 5000 primers in one box that are from the same lot. It doesn't take much shooting to trace a problem to a new batch of primers or powder. Usually a little fine tuning of the load will clear things up and also, a bad batch of primers is a rare thing.

I would sure like to know what you guys have been doing, as I have used CCI primers almost exclusively for over 25 years, and never had a misfire. The times where I have substituted Winchester primers, I have always noted a slight decrease in accuracy.
Mike

I've had so many misfires with CCI that if it weren't for supply problems I'd never load another one. I don't do anything different with them than anything else. Oddly my luck with the Benchrest primers is very good.

I Have used a lot of primers, and a lot of different primers in my 45+ years of reloading. They have come from: Norma, RWS, Alcan, CCI, Federal, Remington, Winchester, Vihtavuori, Fiocchi, CIL and probably a couple more I cannot remember. Reliability has not ever been an issue with any brand that I can remember. I still have a quantity of CIL 8½ and 8½M large rifle primers that have been out of production for at least 25 years. These primers continue to work wonderfully well. As for accuracy, primers can make a difference, but not so that it is usually noticed in hunting loads. As one poster commented, in Long Range benchrest loads, it is more apparent. I do have a 220 Swift that shows a surprising loss in accuracy if I use a certain primer in it with IMR 4064. I have tried this several times with the same verifiable result, so I am convinced it is a unique issue. My 222 Remington seems not to care one whit which primer I use. It still will punch 5-shot, one ragged hole at 100 meters as long as I feed it 50 grain V-maxes or 50 Ballistic Tips or 52 Sierras. I prefer the WLRM or Federal 215 if I am igniting over 65grains of slow burning powder, but that is simply a personal preference. I believe that primers are very well controlled in manufacture, resulting in the dependability we have come to expect. Regards, Eagleye.
