I headed to the first farm and walked about 500 yards through deep snow, getting set up by 3:45 pm. I called for around 25 minutes with no action, so I packed up and moved to another farm about five minutes away.
I parked in the laneway and walked roughly 300 yards to the west edge where the field meets the bush line. I placed the caller about 20 yards out and started with a dying rabbit distress call, switched to some howls, then went back to the rabbit. I’d been calling for about 20 minutes when a coyote showed up.
She took her time coming in. With the field rolling up and down, I kept losing sight of her and then picking her up again. Eventually she stepped out about 45 yards away and stopped broadside. I squeezed the trigger and here that awful sound CLICK. Misfire.
Luckily this coyote wasn’t too smart as she hung around just long enough for me to cycle another round and take the 45 yd shot.
