Ok, so wondering what the smallest (most compact) legal (restricted not 12.x) pistol available in Canada with the following criteria.

Under $1000
Semi auto (not a derringer)
Also not a Boberg - unique is not always good (or cheap)
Readily available ammo (9mm, 22, etc)
Reliable
Available accessories - ie: Magazines..

My first thought was the S&W MP-9 with the smallest back strap. Other suggestions please!
Top of the list so far

MP-9
FMK
Walther PPQ (is this available in Canada with the non-threaded 4.2" barrel?)
Makarov MP-71

The backstrap doesn't make much difference in the overall size. Check out the Glock compacts with Canada legal barrels. The grip is actually a little shorter on them, if you can get past the ugly little bit of barrel poking out the front of the slide to make them legit.
Also, a little over your price tag though, the Boberg is a neat little piece. The grip/magazine is forward of the chamber, it pulls rounds backward out of the magazine and onto a feed ramp. 4.2" performance and nearly as small as some of the compacts we aren't trusted with by the government.

The Boberg is the smallest restricted firearm which I have seen. The one I tried shot well. If size really matters, it would make sense to raise your upper limit.

Although it is 12(x), in my experience the absolute best is the Seecamp 32 ACP. Essentially hand made, stainless, scary small and reliable with Winchester Silvertips (for which the gun was designed). When I bought mine, the waiting list from Seecamp was more than two years!

You know what? I saw a glock 27 with 107mm barrel for $775 or a M&P 40C for $679 again with legal barrel. Irunguns.ca

Both look tiny. Both in .40 cal though. Which could be a plus if you get the extra 9mm conversion barrels for them. The factory .40 mags hold and feed 9mm rounds.

HK P7 PSP. The West German police surplus pistols. Smaller than many prohibited pistols yet it is a restricted pistol. They are very nice.

You could probably find a used P7 or PSP for slightly over your budget.. IMHO It would be better choice than any glock..
