I was out hiking with the scattergun in search of deer or grouse when I spotted a guy walking his dog. I didn't want to spook him so I unloaded the 12 gauge and stepped into the bush a few paces. The guy walks right by without seeing me, but his yellow lab had me pegged even though I couldn't be seen from the trail.I was looking through the underbrush right into the eyes of his pooch, the guy kept walking and had to call his dog to catch up to him.
The guy never knew I was there, but his pooch sure did.:D

Sounds like he had a good dog! Labs are great for smelling out people/animals. Even though it's probably not trained to be used in the bush for hunting purposes, it's in there blood to do what they were designed to do.

I know a guy with a bird dog that brings him shed antlers on a routine basis. Nothing like getting up in the morning to see the antler of a B&C buck sitting on the door step. The guy has a whole box of nice antlers his dog finds.

Smart pups

Before I was born my father used to breed Black Labs. He was the secretary for the Ontario Retriever Club in the late 50's and early 60's. The dogs are extremely smart, very adaptable and well adjusted animals that love to please and are very protective of the ones they love.
Funny thing is ,
it's in there blood to do what they were designed to do.
They weren't designed to be hunting dogs origionally, when the labs were established as a breed they were bred for the purpose of PULLING IN FISHING NETS on shore. Go figger, have you ever won a game of tug of war with a lab. laff, doesn't happen too often.
I've (we,ve) owned 7 black labs. if you don't count the pups sold off.
My best friend was a black lab, I miss him as much as i do my parents.:(

Mike.

I have a black lab female now and she is incredible ,however, my story is about an older hunter(70) who takes his dog on watch with him (on a lead) and watches the dog. It can hear, smell, and watch better than a man! He almost always gets his deer . JITC

i have a lab/collie cross at my parents and a purebred yellow here and both love tug of war. the cross loves it when you sit on the computer chair and she pulls you around on the carpet while you hold her rope toy.

its easy to tell when theres a coyote around. she gets all jittery and her fur stands on end. ever since she literally came face to face with a yote before pops shot it she hasnt liked the smell of them.

the yellow is still a bit slow (9 months old) but is learning how to use her muscle...girlfriend loses tug of war every time:D now if i could only teach her to stick up for herself when she sees other dogs instead of being so submissive. she rolls on her back every time til the unknown dog says "ok" and then they play

i cant wait to get the pup out for her first hunting trip in a week or so.

My friend has a walker/lab mix and he gave it an old shed once when it was little and it chewed on that thing for about 5 months until nothing was left. When that dog turned about a year old it would go out all night long and come back in the morning with new sheds. It came back with 5 sheds last summer. 2 complete matches (4 horns) and one set was huge. couldn`t get my hand around the base of the antler. Have a hard time stealing it away from the dog though lol
