I know this isn't the proper place for this but a long time and valued CGNer is having a lot of difficulty in finding reloadable 43 Mauser and 8x51 Lebel brass.

If anyone here has some to spare, he posts under the handle of "smellie"

I know he would be very appreciative of any help or contributions made.

I also know that in the past, he's been very generous ''paying it forward'' by giving people similar items to get them going.

This is the personal message I received

Got into a bit of a health mess: prostate cancer but got it cured, then stomach cancer so try to cure that one next.

No gun shows in this area and I am not in condition to attend, anyway. Wondering if you can come up with cpl boxes 43 Mauser brass, any make, any age, used or new. I have Canadian money, thanks to Generous Gummint. Also could really use box or 2 of 8mm french lebel rifle.

Can you help?

Thanks so much for the consideration. Take best care.

There was a time when a 43 Mauser was considered perfectly suitable for moose hunting. That was during the Depression when no one had new guns, ammunition was sold by the each, and most hunting was of necessity for food. Come forward 90 years, and all those old Mausers have been replaced 3-4 times with better guns, and all the old ammo has been picked up by collectors or guys who think shouldering a really old gun with really dubious ammunition is a smart idea. If someone wants to work up a 43 Mauser load, they're much better off starting with new reliable brass.

45-70 cases can be made to work. Bevel the rear of the rim to approximate the mauser "A" base, and run them into the 43 m die. A bit of masking tape around the head to centre the case in the chamber when fire forming. Yes I know about the "o" ring thing, but it has never worked that well for me in these rifles. Use new brass if possible, as there is a fair bit of expansion, and some older cases will split when forming. The cases will be a little short, but they do work. 45-90 is better, but is almost as hard to find as the mauser brass. Hope this helps some....catnip

Brass can be made for 43 Mauser from 300 Winchester magnum. I made up a few about a year ago just to see how well they worked. Their on second firing so far. One rifle they will extract form my others you have to use a cleaning rod down the muzzle to tap them out. A bit of lathe work involved, spinning the belt off and thinning the neck.
I am out of 300 win mag cases otherwise I could make a few up. If you can get some cases to me I can make them.

Kind of wondering if you have forgotten the area here on cgn that has a wtb forum in the EE section?
And tossing up a cgn’rs personal address for same?

You know, us peopelekind that had t’uther commitmints that missed the Lumby gun show that you took personnel interest on commenting on here on a public forum.

No mention of my attendance of the Kamloops show though.

Maybe smellie is old ‘nuff to look after his own wtb stuff?

Yeah, I’m here bearhunter.

Smellie reached out to me in a moment of need, what's your problem???

300 win mag brass works well if you turn the belt off or counter bore the chamber for it.

Here is what i did to fix my lack of 43 mauser brass (only had 20) https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/1913863-new-wildcat-43-Express
