So last night at the indoor range as I was introducing a new shooter to hand guns, we were plinking away at the target with my Beretta 92. Unbeknownst to me a dude 5 lanes down pulls out his Smith and Wesson .460 revolver and let loose a shot. Both myself and the new shooter subsequently sheit ourselves as did everyone else in the range. The building promptly reverberated with that shot as I have never ever seen or heard before and a new hole opened up in the ozone layer somewhere im sure. Jesus H Christ I feel bad for any bear that ends up on the wrong end of that revolver elsewhere. I use to think my Ruger .357 was awesome. Last night it was pitifully inadequate.

That's the end of that anecdote.

At one of the ranges I go they have a rule of any caliber as long as it’s in a pistol. Really ? Indoor range. I did yell heavy going off. Twelve inch barreled 375 Winchester going off is very loud. The guy next to me had to move his ammo boxes away from the wall as they where moving from the concussion. No one wanted to fire it. I usually go in and fire the large caliber guns before the store opens as that’s when it gets busy. Some people don’t appreciate heavies going off. I normally don’t shoot them if the range is full. If one fellow was at the range I normally let two cylinders go through my 454 Casual. He complains about everyone so some of us just screw with him within the rules.

Why I rarely shoot indoors as inevitably some #### shoots ultra magnum loads for punching paper at 50 feet. Even with foamies and ear muffs, the concussion of magnum loads inside make it very unpleasant for all shooters. Hearing damage for sure as the sound waves travel through your facial bones into your ear canals regardless of the hearing protection used.
Even if the back stop will take the loads, you really need to have a max fps on at least on the pistol range if there is separate pistol and rifle ranges. Kind of like Harley owners and straight pipes...look at me!
The indoor range I belong to now has a 1200 fps limit. No issue with any of my semi pistols.
