smith and wesson m&p 15-22

Been a while since this has been discussed, and, looks like nothing changed for this so called Variant. Go figure? nothing is inter-changeable to 223 or other restricted calibers. Just a fancy 22LR that seems to scare the heck out of politicians, Police and the anti gun groups. How come Ruger and Mossberg can make basically the same looking thing as non restricted in Canada? Are they not all Variants? Just cant figure and wont bust my chops trying to. I think I need a further education in Canadian gun laws?????????

It was made restricted after the pistol version was imported to Canada. They take the same 25 round mags and so the magazine @ 25 rds became prohibited (unless pinned to 10) and they restricted the rifle at the same time.

Something wrong with that logic of theirs? i.e. why restrict the rifle when there are no mag restrictions for 22LR in Canada. The pistol owners would not dare shoot 25 round mags out of their weapons at any given location because of the restrictions that apply to their weapons.

That's the explanation that was given on the report, but I have the feeling it has more to do with who profits from what - and S&W wasn't budging.

I will preface my comments by saying that I am entirely new to the firearms thing so I could be very wrong about things. If so I don't mind kind and well-defended correction :) .

I too was looking at this firearm. I didn't realize the 25 rnd mag would be a problem because its rimfire. My concern was that the 16 in barrel seems to fall below the minimum length for non-restricted rifles. My thought was that the flash suppressor may bring it up to the non-restricted minimum of 18.5". I am not sure of it does, but if so, a gunsmith should be able to weld it in place to meet nonrestricted requirements.

After reading the RCMP notice, I do see that S&W does retail a 10round model to comply with various state mag limits.

I found the RCMP memo odd in stating that the 15-22 is restricted because it is an m16 variant. There plenty of AR platform rifles that are non restricted, but the key seems to be whether they meet the barrel length minimum or not. Shorter than 18.5" = restricted.

Comments?

Comments, let's see. First comment, welcome to CGN, I'm pretty new myself, and since buying my first restricted (an M&P 15-22), I can tell you it's been an interesting ride from the day the transfer was initiated over the phone and the day I got it to the range (6 months). You are thinking too hard about how a firearm becomes restricted. This document amused me, because I've seen a lot of folks on CGN and IRL saying "it's banned because it's an AR", which seemed a tad too simplistic to fairly explain the classification. However, as you can see, that's precisely why it was restricted. If they had included something about a trigger or because the pistol variant was imported, I would have thought "that makes some sense", but they didn't. The ambiguous nature of the wording in the FA and in this document are something you'll get used to.

Anyway, these days the 25 round mag isn't a problem, because those who bought this rifle when it was first imported were informed by the RCMP (by lettermail) that they had to bring the mags to a gunsmith and get them pinned, then get the smith to certify that it was done. The friend I bought this from had to go through this, and he called the RCMP after receiving his letter requesting some guidance on how to transport it since it was now a prohibited device, and what would happen if he were caught with them on his way to the gunsmith. As his story goes, the officer responded by telling him to "drive slowly".

My advice in all of this? If you're looking at a little .22 plinker that looks awesome and gives you all the features of a "real" AR15 (don't believe me, read around and ask people) for a VERY reasonable price, go buy one. It's a great way to introduce yourself to the 'restricted club' if you're not into handguns. If you can get your hands on extra 25 round mags they will all be pinned to 10 rounds, and in my opinion, are aesthetically the only mag that looks like it belongs in the rifle.

Simple answer is some bureaucrat wanted to pi$$ in our cornflakes with this snub...this rifle had the potential of being a massive hit. Who doesn't want a 22 like this...if it was unrestricted. There is no fighting the restricted status, so easy peasy for them.
