I know there are similar threads to this - ie/ A 'budget' AR etc, but I have yet to read much about the S&W MP 15 sport - anyone have any feedback on it? ..I like that it's US made, but perhaps a Core15, DPMS, or Windham Weaponry would be a better choice all around? ...ideally I'd like to stick to my $1000 budget.

Thanks for any advice!

Have you watched any of the youtube review videos?

Yup watched some of them however some seem to be biased as they just spent their money on the rifle etc ...a few other vids showing the upper blowing up do to squib loads which kinda skews the opinion on the rifle even though it's an ammo issue...I was just hoping for some feedback from someone who owns a few AR's with the S&W being one of them

I would love the M&P 15 as a great entry level AR15 except...... No dust cover and forward assist? I know you don't "need" those. My DPMS LR308 doesn't have those either. But that's a target rifle. This isn't.

The upper/lower and regular parts will be fine. The barrel while not the M4 profile does have a couple of advantages. First its a 1:8 twist which is nice for accuracy (most common precision AR barrel twist in 223/5.56). Also it has the Thompson Centre 5R rifling. Which may help accuracy and cleaning. It's not Chrome lined but has a melonite coating which supposibly works well. So again this might help with accuracy. But it's not free floated. Which doesn't help.

I want to like this AR15 rifle. I really do. I do like S&W, I love AR15 rifles and I even like some of the compromises they made. But.. there are a few too many compromises. When you look closer it's not as good a deal as originally thought. I'd wait and spend a bit more. Get exactly what you want. It'll be cheaper in a package than trying to piece it together or turn a bare bones AR into what it should have been to start with.

If going for a S&W, I'd go up a model or two. Here's the T model from irunguns.ca. $1172 US.

Personally I would look at a rifle like this for an entry AR15. Palmetto State armory.

It's $850 US. It appears to be a good basic AR15 rifle. I like that the barrel is hammer forged and 1:7 twist. Competitors are Windham, Core15 etc.

Great - thanks guys for the advice and info, it's much appreciated!!

...I was looking at the DPMS Oracle initially but after having a poor experience with it during my rental at a local range I've decided to switch brands and possibly up my budget which is why I'm looking at S&W. ...I know 'sky is the limit' when it comes to AR's but I don't have unlimited funds to spend on a rifle right now and I just want something that is reliable and great quality for the $$. I'm looking into the Core15 M4 D.I. ...and also I'll check out the Bushmaster Carbon 15 above...both look pretty good.

It's amazing how many good reviews there are on the Norinco CQ-a but it seems to be highly debated - some are "for" some are "against".. ...I haven't shot one so I can't make that call personally.

Any more comments on any of the mentioned rifles or other suggestions will be appreciated!

It doesn't say anything about the bullet button on the actual advertisement. I'm looking at the Canadian site. Is that the listing on the S&W site? Hmmmm. Worth checking out.

Personally I liked the Palmetto state armory one. It looks like that barrel might be a FN one. Which puts that rifle up another notch if that is the case.

If you want a piston system. Keep in mind though it's harder to modify/upgrade them. Pretty much buy it as is with the view of only changing the pistol grip and stock. Also I'm actually not sold on the piston AR in most cases. If going super short then OK I could see it. But in most cases I don't think you gain as much as you give up. It's a nice looking rifle and well made from what I've read.

Irunguns lists it as Model 811039 on the Canadian site which is a compliant model. 811041 is the M&P T that is not compliant.

It looks like a really nice rifle, but I don't think I'd like the Bullet Button feature..too bad they don't carry the 811041 M&P T on their site.

The Palmetto AR15 Irunguns has up for sale is a really good deal.

Totally..it's out of stock tho :( otherwise I'd probably take it or it'd be on top of my list no doubt! ..I'm leaning Core15 due to the great quality and warranty feedback I've been reading..but still not sure what I'll end up with..Palmetto State rifles sure do seem I like an awesome deal for the price
