So, my dad has a Smith and Wesson Model 10 Revolver

His health is in a fairly rapid decline and we are trying to figure out what to do with the Revolver.

It is currently prohib and we are trying to figure out the manufacture date so we know wether or not we have to rebarrell it to restricted so that he can leave it to me.

the serial starts with c-87

thanks,
bill

As far as I know, there is no year requirement to convert a prohib to a restricted, unless it's a WW2 vintage which can be transferred to you as a 12(7).
If the gun is properly registered and your dad has 12(6), he just has to find a gunsmith who will and can find a >4.2" barrel and install it. Then the gunsmith will need to get a verifier to confirm the new length as a restricted and submit to the CFO for confirmation. Once the registration comes, he can sell/ will it to you as a restricted. The original prohib barrel will have to be confirmed destroyed.
I believe this is the process. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Sorry to say just sell it and get one that is already restricted. It just isn't worth the cost and the hassel.

Unless it has a lot of sentimental value it's really not worth it to rebarrel. I have had quotes of $300 to rebarrel one of mine.

So according to this its between 1948 and 1952.

Are you sure it is actually a Model 10, or an earlier K frame 38? A Model 10 will same M-10 or Model 10 on the frame when you swing out the cylinder. S&W change to model numbers from names in 1957. If it says M-10, but has a 5 digit S/N something is screwy.

If it is a 4" gun then I would have someone carefully measure the barrel length. There are lots of S&W revolvers with 4" barrels that are really >105MM...I have one and it is classified as Restricted. If it is over 105MM you can get it reclassified.

Take care
