Smith and Wesson model 10

Most Model 10's came with 2" and 4" barrels putting them now in the 12(6) prohib category.

There are a few 5" & 6" versions out there.

If going with a 6" model I'd consider stepping up to the venerable Model 14. Same K-frame as the Model 10 but has an adjustable rear site.

There is one in the EE for about $450 ..

Funny how these things seem to go in "runs." There have been a number of them for sale recently. Unfortunately I missed a heavy-barrel 5" earlier in the year, all the more annoying as I didn't pursue it because I thought had just bought a regular Model 10 from a guy in Ontario. (Turned out he was lying through his teeth and had already sold it to someone in Victoria, as I found out 3 mos. later!)

Agreed about NAA's comment on the Model 14. I have a 14-3 and it is Very Nice Indeed. But you won't go wrong with a S&W either way.
And yes, reloading is the way to go- if you can find any powder. A pound goes a long way in a .38 though.

M10s are great plinkers. I have several.

They are fixed sights, and all mine shot to the left (as do most guns in my hands). I had the gunsmith mill the rear sight notch a bit wider, taking all the material off the right side. This moved the groups to POA and also improved the sight picture for my old eyes.

If price is similar, a M14 with adjustable sights would be a good alternative.

They are great fun guns to shoot, just got this one a month or two ago! in VG+ condition.
I have been trying Win 231 & Bullseye with win 158gr. very nice and accurate too!

Can you spare some 231? I'm reluctant to reload these days, not knowing when we will see some. I may have enough left for another year, but that it, then it's gone.

Well then you have more than me! One pound left! here is another picture! enjoy! lets see everyone's Model 10! serial # has been fixed

I don't have many fixed sight DA revolvers. But one that do have and like to shoot is a S&W Heavy Duty in 38 special with a 5 inch barrel.
Because it's built on a one size larger N frame versus a K frame, it's pretty much like a service revolver on steroids.
Made in 1940, and a real pussy cat with factory 38 ammo.

If you find one they are well worth owning.

Is that one of the 38/44s? You're lucky to have one. I don't recall ever seeing one in the EE here. :)

Yes sir, that's the one. I do recall one other HD on the EE. But that was at least two years ago, maybe even longer.

As well mine was issued to the BCPP force and used until 1950. Then IIRC, it went into storage for a bit, then loaned to the RCMP until 1971, whereupon the Model 10 became standard issue.
Then the Mountie had the option of buying it and he did so when he was stationed in Manitoba. Then he sold it to another RCMP member in BC whom then sold it to me.

And yes, I do consider myself very lucky to have it.

Cheers!

There are a few M10's around with 5" barrels, 14's are a better gun if you can find one. 15's are nice as well but it'd rare to see one over 4". BTW the next frame size up from the "k" is the "L" which is 586, 686 etc.

I picked up a Model 10-5 a few years ago from a LGS it was under 300bucks. It came with the original box matching. The guys here on CGN helped me and the serial # match it was made in 1974 not that it might be a collector. the gun was mint. It's a keeper to me. I don't own a lot of S&W but it sure looks good with my 29-2 and 17-4 I sure do like shooting it. I wish I had 12-6 and more money and I would love to own more old S&W That old bluing on the S&W is history
