I work with a guy once in a while who's retired RCMP and used to be big into hunting in Alberta. He's got a smith and wesson 1500 7mm Rem mag that he hasn't even taken out of it's case in 6 years and I'm bugging him into letting me have it from him. I think it's got a 10-15 year old tasco scope on it.
I know nothing of these rifles, do you guys know some good questions to ask about it to help determine if it's got a decent value to it or know anything about these rifles? I'll get more details as I ask now and then.

Thanks everyone.

Thanks, that's pretty much what I have been finding. He told me that Smith and Wesson was making rifles for Weatherby, without trying to hurt his feelings, I told him that Howa was making them for Smith and Wesson. I ave since read that Howa was making the Vangaurd rifles for a while as well.

He's going to double check if his kid wants it and get back to me. No rush, but I could use a 7mm RM. I don't have one yet but I have all these bullets, brass and dies :)

A retired RCMP?
Negotiate with his favourite bottled beverage.
Get right to the point - how much do you want for it?
What will happen to it if you don't sell it to me? My wife said she would just call APD and have them pick mine up! She might be further ahead to cremate them with me . . .
Given a willing buyer and a willing buyer lossened up with a couple clinical ounces . . two fingers at a time . . . I am sure you can work something out.
Since it has been in a case for six years it may be reduced to sawdust and rust. Send me his regimental number so his age can be determined!!!

Howa makes the Vanguard, just as they made rifles for S&W and Mossberg.

He's a good guy, and the head of security at a local casino that I do technical work at.

He's not going to turn it in, in fact he's anti registry and thinks it's a useless pile of ####.

We have had that conversation.

I would say, offer him $400.00 for the package. You can get a brand new Howa or Weatherby for not too much more than that. I would say that if your friend doesn't want to sell it for that price, he is going to end up keeping it. The price of inexpensive rifles has decreased in the last few years, as companies have become more competitive; selling good rifles for good prices. If your friend doesn't want to sell at that price, look around, and see what else you can buy new for no more than that..........ie, the savage Edge (or whatever they call it now).
