thanks a lot for the phone number, heard a lot of god things about his barrels from a couple of DCRA shooters at the Salmon Arm gun show last weekend. Good show by the way, lots of money floating around and lots of regular show sellers stocking up for next season. bearhunter

I wonder why we don't see Ron's barrels being used in the 100 / 200 yard BR circuits?

The primary reason you don't see Ron's barrels used for short range BR is that he has never made any attempt to promote his barrels for the purpose. After all, he is already making all the barrels he can so has no need to expand his business.
The other reason is, while Ron's barrels are certainly capable of the required level of precision, they are more difficult to break in than the preferred button rifled brands. Other cut rifled barrels of past years, while sometimes competitive, were also less "user friendly" (Atkinson, Scherer). The superbly finish and lapped Krieger barrels are a bit of an exception in that they seem to be nearly as consist in performance as the top buttoned barrels.
I have two slow twist barrels from Ron which I have shot at close range. The 6mm is a 14 twist which shot very well initially but which started giving me fouling problems for some reason at about the 600 round mark. I have set this barrel aside for the time being.
The other is a 30 cal on a hunter class rifle which shoots as well as any hunter barrel I've had.
There is a great deal of inertia in the short range BR game. Shooters are reluctant to deviate too much from the accepted formula or from popular brands. New makers who have made some inroads (Lilga, Pac -Nor, Gaillard, etc.)are all makers who made a conscious effort to access that particular market. Promotion is a big part of the picture, I think.
As much as I like Ron's barrels, I would still choose a Hart or Shilen as the basis of a BR rifle. This shows I am just as conservative in this regard as any other accuracy fan.
Ultimately, the real test of a barrel's precision may well be how it performs in the short range BR venue. That a given barrelmaker's product is not commonly used here does not necessarily mean it is incapable. It only means it is not popular. I think it is safe to say that a BR shooter who wants to win is not likely to #### around with untried components but will stick with proven brands. Likewise, an established BR gunsmith is going to be much more comfortable with components with which he has experience. So he is unlikely to want to use a barrel by Smith, Obermeyer, or Border although all might be very capable. Regards, Bill.
One would think that, if the BR proven brands are so superior, their use would all but guarantee success in other venues. This does not appear to be the case, however, and there are a number of makers who produce popular barrels for use in long range match rifles and whose barrels are seldom considered for use on a short range BR rifle.
