I finally got some time off and managed to mount some Smith sights on a couple of my 91/30's. I put the fiber optic red one on the 1944 Izhevsk ex-sniper. I'm excited to see how this one shoots. The bore is mint even though the rest of the rifle is rough. Also an interesting stock repair on this one.
I put the "classic" one on the 1936 Tula. Both are adjustable for height. I used the Elby sight pusher to remove the old sights and to push the new ones in. I'll be taking it to the range for fine adjustments on the bench. I'll post my results tonight or tomorrow.

I've already done the sight mod myself and it solved the shooting high problem. Josh's sights are a lot nicer than the rough mod I did.

The post can be tapped out by taking the sight out of the dovetail, put it in a vise, use a small brass punch and go though the hole in the top of the hood. The post should come out through the bottom. The post actually tapers out wider near the bottom. You can see the first taper just showing in my picture. The second taper is right at the bottom of the post. I filed this down a bit and hammered the post into the sight base further. This is a one way trip but it doesn't matter cause if you go too far you can file the tip down a bit or use the rear sight to correct elevation.
Not all sights work this way. I have one 91/30 that the post didn't come out the bottom of the sight block.

Hey thanks for that info. Soon as I get some ammo for this unfired 91/30 I will certainly do this mod if it shoots high.

I thought about doing the surplusrifle.com conversion, but your mod is much simpler.

Hello,

If you'd like to send that my way I can fix that for you.

As well, I *think* I see a stray fiber-optic strand on the sight -- is this correct? I'll need to cover that under warranty if it's not a hair or some dang thing. There's no way that post should have gotten out the door!

I tend to be very particular about my sights...

Thank you!

Regards,

Josh

That's actually a hair off a rag I was using to wipe down the rifle. I didn't see it when I took the pic. I should have mentioned that in the original post. Sorry. I replaced that sight with one of yours cause that one looked like poop and wasn't adjustable. The sight beside that one is the one that that the post doesn't go all the way through the sight block.

I managed to get to the range yesterday and sight in the Mosins. It was a piece of cake with sight pusher and the adjustable posts. The "classic" sight I put on the 36 Tula had to be raised quite high before it even came close to being on the paper at 50 yards.
The fiber optic one went on the 44 Izhevsk ex-sniper and didn't have to be raised at all. Each had to be pushed to the right a bit to get them in line with the center of the target.
My results weren't good enough to post target photo's, but I can tell you that the 44 Izhevsk ex-sniper was way more accurate than the Tula. I was having great results at 200 meters, but not so good at 100.
Overall, I have to say that the sights are a huge improvement over anything else I've tried. Combined with the Elby sight pusher, it makes sighting in a pleasure.
