Smith & Wesson 4.2" 629 44 Mag

The gun is brand new in the box at the gun shop ..... only test fired from the factory ....
I noticed some peening on the cylinder notches on the cylinder ...... very light Very Very light but enough that I noticed apon a close inspection .....
And it was very dirty... like they took it fresh from the assembly line, test fired it and through it in a box... with the burn rings, dirt and assembly loob all over it ....I can live with the dirt, but I was surprised with the peening even as light as they were ......
I didn't end up buying the gun but im curious, if this is the new standard at Smith and Wesson
 
This is not the gun .but the pic shows what peening is ..... ....
The peening is know were neer as bad as it is in this pic.... but the fact that there is any at all has got me concerned..

mine came with slight peening and was dirty from the factory but they are test fired before they leave (mine looked like it had a couple of cylinders of ammo through it) . the peening is normal on stainless and mine has not gotten any worse after about 1500 rounds.
 
Sounds like someone had fun dry firing it and if all the "holes" have burn marks then someone also enjoyed putting a few rounds downrange….but I could be wrong.
 
I don't think too many manufacturers clean after the test fire. my sigs and STI has residue and/or packing grease.

i haven't noticed wear on the cylinder notches on mine but i haven't inspected closely either. hoping mikey454 is right
 
All new Smith and Wesson firearms are factory fired, it shows up more on the stainless models, the cylinder is black on the front of 99% of all the new guns we get in. The barrel is also dirty. Thats the way they come from the factory, I have also seen the "light" peening mark on the gun's. Some of the guns all chambers are black and some of the guns it's every other one.
