I have a 6" S & W 586 revolver in .357 Magnum of which I am greatly fond, but I have to pay for a new (to me) truck. This revolver is of the earliest vintage, of the "no-dash" spec. I'm thinking of selling it and replacing it, when possible, with one of the later "dash 2 or 3" etc. variants with the later improvements. This is to avoid selling my Python, which is not going to happen.

How much of an improvement would a later 586 or 686 be over my current model, which shoots fine and works great?

Keep your 586...It won't even come close to helping you with your truck payment by selling it, and you'll spend a lot more, for nil improvement, if you bought a new one later.....
Just a suggestion, but I would seriously consider selling my sister/wife/ 'significant other'/ mother, etc, into some type of sordid, moral turpitutde before dumping a perfectly good firearm.....

586 is no longer made, it ended production in 2000.
I also have a early one with no dash, My 586 would be the last revolver I would sell out of the five revolvers I own.
The later the revision the poorer the finish, the rougher the trigger pull. That what I have found.

I vote keep it and get rid of something else or lose the truck! cause once it's gone you won't find another down the road......
