I'm still kind of torn between a 617 and a Kimber rimfire target. I got my hands on a Kimber the other day and it felt very nice but I still have a soft spot for wheel guns, just something about them. Just wondering if anyone knows of a place in Winnipeg where they sell that model or even it's big brother (686?) seeing as they would be close to the same weight. Cabelas and WSS don't have any revolvers at the stores here.

I say see if you can hook up with a local handgun shooter to try at least shooting a revolver since it sounds like you haven't had this pleasure yet. Buy and bring your own ammo just to be nice.

For .22 semi there's a lot of superb shooting and handling guns. For .22 revolver the choice isn't bad at all but it's not as big.

If it was me and I wanted a brand new .22 wheelgun I'd go for the Model 63 and fit it with some other grips that fit my big hands better. I like the lighter weight in a .22 so it actually kicks a little more. The 617 by all accounts is a superb shooter but with the 45'ish ounce weight you won't feel much. On the other hand the 29'ish oz 63 will at least give a nice little bit of muzzle rise. For me getting a decent amount of recoil is a big part of what shooting is about. Otherwise I may as well click the mouse in some computer game.

Mind you this personal policy has bitten me in the backside. I shoot .22 pistol in our local Speed Steel matches and the muzzle rise in my S&W 422 is enough that I can't compete with the bloke using the Browning Buckmark with the bull barrel. The lack of recoil in that heavy weight platform allows him to flow from target to target so much easier than I can manage. He let me try it and I have to admit that the advantage the gun gave him is pretty good. Such is life in the fast lane though :D

Oh, and if you like blue guns do not pass up on the old S&W classic option. The model 17 is a K frame .22 that has an extremly enthusiastic following. And if you get a K frame model 19 later on then you have the perfect pair for practice and bullseye shooting.
