Does anybody have a S&W 745 ? How is it compare to a 645 or a 1911 in 45 ACP ? What is the market value ? Thanks.

The 745 is a single action gun where the 645 has a double action trigger. My 745 is more accurate than my Colt Gold Cup but I can't shoot it as well. My Gold Cup is a little fussy as far as ammo. My 745 has never failed to feed with any ammo.

One time I got one of our bullseye shooters to shoot my 745. At 20 yards (standard bullseye stance, (one handed)) he put 7 of 8 shots into one group all touching. The one shot he pulled so it was out of the group. I think this gun is tighter than the 645.

Like I said, I don't shoot this one as well as my 1911s. You have to try it. If you like the feel of the gun then its a great gun.

My gun came with a set of rubber grips for the 645. Without modification these don't quite fit the 745. The previous owner had to shave some of the rubber off the top left grip so the safety . I took them off because I liked the look of the original wood grips on the gun.

My 645 is the most accurate .45 I have ever shot. Going by Rudy's comments the 745 should bee the same in this department. I paid $300 for my 645.

Wow, I remember the 745, a blast from the 1980s. They are one of the better S&W semi-autos, but they don't really carry much value. They fall into the: "unusual, but not collectible" column. I'd say around $600 for a mint one. If you can find some one who is interested, you might get a bit more.

I would like to have one 45 but not 1911 because I have 1911s alreday. I saw a 745 for 700 and could not make up my mind. Any suggestions ? Thanks.

645/745 have all the features a 1911 SHOULD have.....ramped & bushingless barrel, external extractor, no lame grip safety, one piece guide rod.....I could go on:)
$700 sounds steep, but they are good guns, and you could probably shoot it for a few years and get $600 back from it.

My buddy had 2 of them and both shot extremely well especially with FMJ loads. Loony sized groups off the bench at 25 yards was not a problem. However, I do not enjoy the ergonomics of this particular gun. I would say $650-700 for value.

Wow! thats a good deal, double that around here!

I bought mine as a package deal.
S&W 745 six mags
S&W 586 set up for PPC, 4 position front sight
S&W model 14
Llamma 1911 style 38 Super
Holsters for all above
Generic Colt 36 calibre cap and ball revolver
Lee progressive press
powder scale
powder, primes, lots of brass
total price $900 in 1997 :D

On the 745. It is a very good gun but it typically sells for a lot less than it should based on it's design an quality of construction. I strongly recommend trying it first. It is not a gun I shoot much but it would be one of the last guns I would sell if forced to.
