I've fired one...MUST use moons.
But that being said, you can go without clips and it will work.
Only down side, you'll need to bring a chop stick to poke the spent casings out of the cylinder.
And also there might be a headspace issue on some brands of 9mm or even more so with reloads...which will result in failure to fire.

You'll get light strikes if you're not using moon-clips on the 929.
I load up a bunch of MCs before hitting the range. Easy & quick to load/unload and keeps the empty casings together…..
I have both and can say the moons are faster to reload and pickup brass in matches.Almost bought a 929, then decide for range shooting moons are too much trouble compared to 686.
