Smith & Wesson M&P 15 Sport...your thoughts

I used to own a S&W AR. The first model available to Canada. 17" barrel, made by stag..... Good gun. I sold it. And built one instead......

I now have a sport model inbound with the mil/Leo deal. I expect good things, especially for $750! It's supposed to arrive before the end of the week.....

Down side would be the missing dust cover & forward assist. But then again it is a "sport" model.....

Cheers!

The FA is on the bolt carrier, just like the original M16, not that you'll need it. I guess if you're rolling around in the dirt (and not firing) the dust cover would be good. Most people at the range would wonder what you're doing though.

I have the M&P 15 Tac. It is awesome. I put a Geissele trigger in it. The Sport is the same gun without a couple of useless components. It has no forward assist or dust cover over bolt. Both items are useless at the range

Well, it IS registered in her name .... ;>) I bought an 'as new' Series 187 - ###X Ranch Rifle at the same time. I'm going to fit it with an Accu-Strut stabilizer and a Choate M14-type flash hider.

First impression out of the box - nice rifle! Don't care for the high A2-type front sight, but that can be replaced with a low profile unit - eventually. First I want her to learn the rifle. To that end, we're going to buy her a CMMG .22 LR conversion. Yes, I know that it will need plated ammo to avoid plugging the gas port, the bore should be cleaned and that a few rds of .223 should be fired after any amount of .22 LR.

As a lefty, she quickly found out how to work the controls, but we do have an ambi-safety and mag release coming. I do think that it's a non-issue generally.
As for the FA and dust cover - meh. My wife doesn't care for the 'tacticool' look of many AR's. In fact, she laughs at them. She has a 'Muddy Girl' camo kit coming to 'bling' out her gun and all her accessories will be in 'Muddy Girl'.

We ordered a red dot sight for it and the mount will not tighten on the receiver rail. I found out that some are specific to Weaver bases. It's going back to the dealer.

If anyone can find a better rifle at the price - go for it!

sure it is lol.

My wife shot her S&W MP Sporter yesterday for the first time. Checking the '0' at 25 yds, she fired a 5 rd group under 2" with three rds in a tiny clover leaf! At 100 yds four of 5rds went into a 4" group with a called flyer.
This was with the high A2 front sight and the factory rail mounted rear with a miniscule aperture. Ammo was American Eagle .223 55 gr. Absence of the dust cover and FA was not an issue .... ;>) except for the macho 'tacticool' factor. Can't wait to see what she does with the red dot sight.

She did appreciate the after market ambi-safety and mag release. If it was mine, I'd change out the gas block for a low profile unit and a tubular fore stock.
