After some further deliberation (and unexpected financial diversion) I think I'm going to try a non-1911-based 22 pistol. I've been reading up on the S&W M&P22 and the ISSC M22. Anybody care to weigh in on these? Any personal experience, and which sponsors have these in stock? Thanks for your input. I'd prefer a small-ish frame since I want the wife & daughter to use it.

The GSG 1911 in .22 is less $$ than the MP22 almost everywhere. Just ordered mine from Flaherty's and it was almost $100 cheaper than the smithy. If you are going for smaller frame, the Browning 1911 is an 85% frame.

You may want to check availability of both. Depending on how big a hurry you are in to get on that might limit your options. I just picked up an M&P22 and the store said they won't be getting more for a while due to demand.
