I'm looking into this for a good friend who shoots a Smith & Wesson M&P 9. They really like the look of the HK USP in two tone and how it is a little shiny but not to the point of it looking "blingy" but already has an M&P and wants to refinish the slide. I'm thinking if the finish currently on the M&P is removed on the slide it will give a moderately shiny steel look.

How would the durability of the slide hold up with the finish removed? Has anyone out there removed the finish on theirs and kept it that way or have any photos with the finish off the slide?

Otherwise, I'm going to send it in to Mr. Katanko to refinish the slide with a hard chrome.

Let me know your thoughts, thanks in advance,
Tim.

If you take metal down to the "white" you just have to keep it polished to prevent it from rusting.

Too "blingy" for me, though.

NAA.

It isn't bluing, it is a black coating. Try just taking off the high flat spot on the side of the slide, not the entire thing. Just use some fine emory cloth taped to your table flat.
You should be able to go up the grits after the black has gone, and then polish it.
I was considering the same thing myself after I saw a pic here somewhere.

Thanks a lot for all the info. I'll pass it along and post some pics if I see what comes of it. I may spend a day with working on it to see what happens.

Check out Dan Burwell and his work. He is also on Mp-pistol.com.

Lots of guys have had their slides done like that. I think they call it "melting"?... I think...

When I had my M&P I was looking into it but never really dove that far down.
