Smith & Wesson M&P40 question

Wondering if there is a mod I can do or a smith can do to stop the slide going forward on its own when you hammer charged mag in? M&P is a fine pistol but I think this has got to be one of the worst features on a pistol I have seen.
 
I personally like the feature, you are at battery with one less action required to continue firing. I participate in IPSC competition and speed during magazine changes during a course of fire mean a second off your run time.

I do not participate in IPSC so speed is not and issue for me. I do not trust that a round actually will be chambered by slamming the mag in, I would rather manually rack the slide myself.
 
From the I heard it happens due to the flex in the polymer frame that releases it (thats the word om the street anyway), my walther does it as well. If you dont like it dont seat the mag so hard push it up and giver a small tap.

It really doesn't take much of a tap to send that slide frying forward. I generally like to keep it simple and keep my muscle memory the same so always tap and rack which more often then not leaves me with a live round on the ground and only 9 in the gun.
 
if speed is not a concern, I am not sure why you want to slam the mag in. I have been shooting my M&P40 and never had the slide moving forward on its own because I just put in the mag with normal force. In this way, my 3 guns(all I have so far, glock g41, SR1911 and MP40) behave the same. I just pull the slide after that and start shooting.

This feature exists in many pistols including, but certainly not limited to, M&P, Glock, CZ, etc. Either for duty or competition, the time it takes to rack the slide with every mag change could mean the difference between life and death or winning or losing. As someone else said, if you don't want this to happen don't slam the mag. As for me, I like this feature.

I've seen the same on Glock as well. Not on regular basis, but more then couple of times.
 
As has been stated already if speed isn't an issue then tone it back rather than slamming a mag in, or do a press check to make sure the round chambered. . . even aim and pull the trigger, if the round didn't seat then you get to practice a stoppage drill.

I disagree with the highlighted. No one wants a dead mans click when you depend on that gun firing in a life or death situation. I should also say that I am not slamming it more so working the pistol as it should be worked and the slide goes forward.
 
I understand the points everyone is trying to make, however I was more interested to see if there was a 'fix' to the slide going forward. I'm guessing it is just something I will have to live with.
 
I hope a smith can chime in on the OP's original question since he did point out it has become a;
1) I like it
2) I don't
3) Use less force
4) Anything I forgot

If this is a design failing correctable issue I am now curious. I personally would not correct it but that is my choice.

As far as I know there is nothing to fix, op if it bothers you that much you may need to consider another gun thats what my wife did when she had a m&p9 and if I remember it even mentions it in the owners manual.
 
I think this is a liveable situation, but I know I find it disconcerting myself.

If it was a _feature_ I'd be okay with it, and if it _never happened_, I'd be okay with that too. The fact that it happens inconsistently is annoying.

The best thing is to learn not to be surprised when it _does_ happen, and obey, obey, OBEY Cooper's third rule of gun safety [finger....trigger, etc.].

When you slam the mag in and slide goes forward it should scoop the first round from the fresk magazine right away. So you are saving time not loosing it when you are ready to go without releasing the slide manually.

Should is what concerns me. I have had a few instances (well two times actually) when should turned into didn't. Dead man's click.....
