I just ordered a Smith & Wesson Model M&P in 40 S&W with a 4 1/4" barrel.

It looked like a nice compact pistol a shade over the 12-6 prohib barrel length limit.

I have a S&W Model 639 in 9mm which has a 4" barrel (12-6) that I am quite fond of and I figured the M&P would be just as handy and concealable and I wouldn't need to bother with the wheel barrow full of DFAIT paperwork I need to get a 12-6 prohib back & forth across the USA/CDN border each trip.

I find my Kimber in .40 S&W with its 5" culvert pipe of a barrel too ungainly and bulky for a carry gun even though it is a tack driver on paper targets.

I invite objective opinions & evaluations from any GUNNUTZ who own Smith & Wesson M&P pistols.

Funny how this keeps comming up every week or so... M&P's must be catching on! (note - use search!)

I have one and I love it! Eats pretty much anything and damned accurate too!

No issues with my M&P9, several thousand rounds through it at this point. I clean it regularly but really don't know why, it's never hicupped. Kind of boring really, except that I'm much faster with the M&P than I am with anything else. I find the accuracy doesn't fall apart at speed either (good ergonomics). At first the trigger will seem rough, but it will smooth and lighten until it feels like a 2 stage rifle trigger. Dan Burwell in the States is able to do all kinds of custom work on them. Check out Raven Concealment Systems for a terrific carry rig that'll make it vanish without torturing you.

Use search..........what search???

The CGN search function hasn't worked correctly in so long I don't bother with it anymore.

Every time I tried to use the search function it was fcuked so I gave up on it.

Reality break, Search blows - not blaming anyone, but it really doesn't work well for guns, for example there aren't enough characters in M&P to generate any results.h

Very reliable. Eats all factory ammo and reloads flawlessly.. Trigger eventually gets better. Looks nice. Easy field strip for cleaning. Throws brass at your head when loading warmish.

I think I've got about 1500-1700 down the pipe, and the only problems I ever had were user induced. I rode the slide back while slingshotting it when it was new, and the blunt Rem ammo caught on the feed ramp. A few reloads with light primer strikes, from not seating primers well. Otherwise, drop the slide and it goes.

Pricedo:

This is what I am bringing to the SigSauer Academy in June. It is also my carry piece when I go to Laconia. I have a leather pancake holster and a Serpa.

I also installed Tritium sights and am going to order a set of CTC laser grips for it. And as someone mentioned, it eats anything you feed it!

I'll be bringing my S&W MP40 (if it has arrived by then), my S&W 639 (12-6) (9mm), my Colt Cobra (12-6)(.38 SPL) & a U-Haul to carry the paperwork in.

I'm also bringing my 50% white metal Ruger P89DC (9mm) for comic relief which I incidentally love & which shoots lie a dream. I wouldn't trade it for a wheel barrow full of Colt or Springfield autos which I've owned a few of.

I will be stopping by and doing some shooting at my NH shooting club in Plymouth, NH that I've been a member of for 3 years ($25 a year......no provincial CFOs to drive operating & compliance costs through the roof) and which is one of the safest & well set up & managed clubs I've ever attended.

I'll also be dropping by my Maine shooting club just outside Augusta (also $25 per year) for a shoot.

Its a sad commentary when a shooter can maintain membership in TEN USA shooting clubs for what it costs to maintain one club membership in Canada.

Griff........that S&W MP40 with the 4 1/4" bbl. qualifies you as a honorary 12-6 or more precisely a 12-6 1/2.

I tried Griffoneur’s last weekend. Very nice gun! The grip feels better than Glocks, as does the trigger (both its feel against the trigger finger and its pull). I felt the grips were a little flat in my hands, so I suspect I’d prefer the grip insert with the thicker palm swells. The sights were nice and clear, although I didn’t notice they were Tritium sights. Maybe I was too excited!

I got to shoot it only at a short distance, but all the shots disappeared pretty much into a ragged hole. I had only shot older S&W semis in the past (5904, 5906, 39) and I would say the M&P is just as reliable but with a much better trigger and much more accurate.

The only negative point for me, because I’m used to shooting heavy steel frame guns, was the snappiness of the recoil. I guess I’d need some practice with it, before I could shoot it as fast as my Para P14-45. But it certainly left a very good impression on me. Thanks Griffoneur!

I've had one in 9mm for almost 2 years now...great sights, good ergnomics, decent trigger! faily accurate, looks even better after I polished the slide flats and trimed the beavertail... ya I like it ;)

I own and love my M&P 9MM. Being lighter it recoils more than my CZ Shadow and is not as accurate from a bench then either of my three CZ's or my Tanfoglio BUT it is accurate enough for what I use it for, that is playing IDPA and IPSC.

For me and this is very subjective I have found:

Plus:

1. I can draw it faster than the CZ's because it is lighter.
2. I can drive it from target to target faster, again due to it's wieght
3. Adjustable grip helped me find the right one for my hand.
4. Dawson Precision makes a FO front sight that mates with the factory rear perfectly.
5. My trigger on my gun has not been touched and breaks clean at 5.5lbs.
6. The finish is excellent and durable.

Negative:

1. Because it is lighter it felt recoil is more than the steel pistols. This slows down accurate double taps on targets slightly.
2. The grip while good is not near the grip of the CZ's and Clones. I wish they had deepened the undercut on the grip below the beavertail.
3. The trigger is a constant 5.5lbs, while my CZ Shadow drops to 4 lbs in SA mode and is shorter and slightly crisper. The Shadows trigger has not been touched.

IMHO the M&P is a great duty pistol, a market it not doubt was designed for. Light for carry and as durable and reliable as a duty pistol has to be. For playing the games it will outshoot most shooters skills. With the price of the gun now getting closer to the CZ 75B and Glocks it is slowly losing it's price advantage.

If you like the feel of the gun and you shoot it as good as you think you can then it is the pistol for you.

Take Care
Bob
