Hey guys I am a new to this and was wondering if I can get some help, when I cleaned my S&W I noticed that the tip of the barrel had rugged tare marks on the sides. I have no idea how they got there, is this normal for this gun after firing a good amount of rounds ?

It is lead build up, so yes it is a type of metal.

The bullet doesn't contact the area where the build up is, it is hot lead gasses that deposit there, and will become very hard.

Use a copper scouring pad for quick and easy cleaning. Just make sure it is pure copper, and not plated steel, as steel will remove the finish and scratch up the barrel.

You can use a magnet to make sure it's copper, as a magnet won't stick.

Don't worry about it and definitely don't try to fix it. The muzzle can get quite hot and powder and lead residue can bake on . The barrel cone has a crown on it so there wont be any effect to accuracy or reliability.

Just clean it like normal and don't worry about tiny scratches or blemishes. It's a gun not a fancy paper weight so have fun with it.

The copper washed 22 will do the same thing, you can scratch the copper off with your finger nail. If you ask me it’s just a gimmick and I never found a brand that shot well in anything I have.
