SMLE 1917 Enfield marked "Osterr Gendarmerie"

Refers to Osterreichische Gendarmerie.

Osterreichische = Austrian (well Osterr means Austria, I am going to assume the longer version is "Austrian" or some such)
Gendarmerie = "Civilian" Police force with Military powers inside ones own country generally.

Was used by the Gendarmerie not the police. They are a civilian law enforcement agency as they are not attached to the Military but to consider them "Police" is inaccurate.

They are organized, trained and equipped as military units. They are tasked with the internal defense of ones country from mainly domestic threats. Where as the military is meant for foreign threats.

Just another interesting mark, Have two of them.
Now the odd one I have is marked MGM (Metro Goldwyn Mayer) Probably was in a lot of movies during the time they owned it:D
Wonder if it was in "the Four Feathers"? (the first version) Or even Gunga Din!
Heck, Maybe EVEN Douglas Fairbanks coiulda used it!

I've seen a enfield marked with chinese script before. These were used sold to the chinese forces pre ww 2 and used by various forces right up to the malayan conflict
