I just purchased a 1918 SMLE No1 Mk3* (Enfield built). While researching all of the markings I discovered “HV” stamped on the barrel behind the rearsight. According to the Skennerton book that means “High velocity ; sighted for Mk VII ball”.

I have not seen that before, is it of any significance or is that common amongst SMLE rifles?

Hi Th. Usually the stamp behind the rear sight on the barrel is HV (over) SC for High Velocity - small cone. When the SMLE was first manufactured the rear sight bed was higher and it was sighted for the Mk VI (round nosed) round. When the Mk VII high velocity came out that necessited changes in long range sight, a magazine alteration, and a lower rear sight bed to allow for the flatter tragectry of the new round.
Rifles that were converted and rifles of new manufacture with all the improvements were stamped on the barrel as stipulated. John
