I thought about asking the local smith about this but i fig Jason is busy enough ( why bother him when i can bother you guys haha)

Ok the reason why .......the SMLE i am restoring ( i am having alot of fun doing this BTW) is all numbers matching now I discovered that the sight is also serial numbered but some one took a file to it and the the actual sight (not the elevation indicator need to be removed the windage adjusment ? it held on with a cross pin and it don' come easy.

thanks for the help

After 1916 when the Mk III* was introduced the rear sight windage was pinned and eventually eliminated for production reasons during the war.

If yours is pinned it would be original for the period and I would just leave it as is.

Thanks recce but someone has filed the V notch bigger for quick acquisition either in service or as a "meat gun" I have another pinned sight but i want to switch out the parts to retain the orig rifle
serial number on the sight
