SMLE Ross/Cooey Sight

That sight was designed for .22 conversions, but it will fit on a .303 quite nicely. I believe these were built up by Cooey, and had the rear sight from a Mk III Ross. Seems a little pricey, though. Maybe I'm just getting old and cheap.

The sight is Ross battle aperture sight that was used on the Cdn model MkIII Ross and some MkII** rifles. The base was an adaptor allowing this sight to be used on the No2 .22" LE. Many of this model sight were made by Cooey and are stamped with the HWC in oval Cooey logo.

So...

It was designed for a .22, but was it typically (ever?) used for a .303? It's graduated for 800 yards which is not as far as the 2000 yards for a regular .303 SMLE sight but a little long for .22.

Its a Ross sight. That's why the elevation goes that high. It was a way of fitting an aperture sight to the .22" rifles.

.22 vs. .303

I suspect this is a .22 sight but playing around with it I see that there are two scales. The scale on the right side of the 'ladder' does not line up with the SMLE sights and would appear to be for .22. However, the scale on the back face is different and matches exactly the original .303 SMLE sights. That is to say, for example, if you set the SMLE sight to 800 yards and the 'Ross/Cooey' sight to 800 yards, all the blades/notches and apertures line up. This works for all the ranges. Maybe this was a dual purpose sight?

My reason for asking is that I have a 1916 BSA SMLE that was rebarreled in Canada in 1923 and then FTR'd in 1953 that came with this sight on it. I'm trying to satisfy myself that it should be there.

Not me!!

I hope you don't think I bought that e-bay sight for silly money. I'm looking more fondly at my SMLE after seeing what it sold for though.
